Camp Concordia was a World War II internment camp for German POWS from May 1, 1943 through November 8, 1945. At its height, the camp held over 4,000 Germans. Strategically located in the heartland of America, where prisoners could be employed on local farms, the camp saw only 2 escapes and 8 POW deaths during its operation. History of Camp Concordia. September 15, 1942-November 5, 1945. Native grass bordering T-9 along its perimeter is maintained and mowed, and surrounding trees – either purposely planted or volunteer – are kept trimmed. Directly south of T-9, a small park area owned by the POW Committee contains a number of well-established fruit and shade trees and makes for a pleasant area during warmer weather. The POWs were initially taken to work on farms in army trucks. This picture is of an army truck with a POW work detail and their guards passing through Concordia. The POWs at Camp Concordia had several bands and orchestras, among them the 47th Grenadier Band. The POW dance band played for USO dances. German POW Camp Concordia Museum. Visitors are invited to the Camp site two miles north and one mile east of Concordia. Participants are encouraged to tour building T-9, view the new museum and related exhibits. Visitors will see pictorial exhibits of camp activity, read compelling stories of Army personnel stationed at Camp Concordia, as well as stories of German POWs whose memories of their incarceration were ironically positive.
