Powell Gardens' Blog: May 2012
http://powellgardens.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html
Thursday, May 31, 2012. The warmest spring in history has brought about the earliest flowering and fruiting ever recorded for many plants at Powell Gardens. Meteorological "Summer" begins on June 1st and a visit to the gardens now will reveal some shocking plants at their prime nearly a month ahead of "normal" schedules. The pulsing buzz of the dog day or scissor-grinder cicada can already be heard - normally a sound of the Dog Days of summer. Peaches ripe in May? These are 'Harrow Diamond' Peaches.

Thursday, March 29, 2012. The native Eastern Redbuds (. Began blooming at Powell Gardens on March 19, 2012 and have held well through March 28th and into today. They usually begin peak bloom around April 10th at Powell Gardens so this was an early event this year and it has been spectacular! Here's a panorama looking towards the Visitor Center from the road between the parking lots. The redbuds and whitebuds (. Alba') are really putting on a show! Redbud's flower color actually is a blue-pink and looks f...

Tuesday, January 31, 2012. Yes, that's a sprinkler on in the Conifer Garden. North of the Visitor Center. Our snow drought has meant a real drought now as rainfall has just been spits and drizzles too. 6 days in January 2012 have had a temperature above 60F! At the end of January? Almost unheard of for "up here" but with just a bit of cold damage and lows hovering around 10F in protected places, it is the new normal this year. HHG Horticulturist Matt Bunch. Thursday, December 13, 2012. Hollywood at Powell Gardens. Here is the line of seedling Possumhaws or Deciduous Holly. Along the entrance road by the gatehouse (you can see the road and gatehouse in the background). We grew these from wild collected seed and the girl plants are filled with fruit from orange-red to red. The bare trees are male but needed for pollination. Possumhaw hollies have tiny flowers in mid spring rich in nectar and make a fine honey. Here is an image of our American Holly. We have i...

Friday, January 4, 2013. Our League of Ivies. Is more than just "Any of a genus of climbing or trailing plants having lobed or evergreen leaves." This usually means the ubiquitous English Ivy (. Which is grown indoors as an ironclad house plant or outdoors mainly as a groundcover. English Ivy is a native to Europe, North Africa and Western Asia. Besides English Ivy, there are actually two other hardy species of vines known as ivies that are common in Greater Kansas City. Why do we always want the exotic?

GARDENS BY T: GIVERNY AND MONET
http://gardensbyt.blogspot.com/2012/05/giverny-and-monet.html
Sunday, May 27, 2012. Giverny, a village in the province of Normandy is about 50 miles northwest of Paris. O n day two we traveled by motor coach to my most anticipated destination of the tour, Monet's Garden in Giverny. We passed fields of bright yellow canola. Drove along the Seine, saw a barge. And marveled at the quaintness of the homes and churches in the small villages. Canola field and tree infested with mistletoe. Monet's Giverny residence was a former cider farm. Sights and Sounds of The Garden.

Saturday, June 16, 2012. In direct contrast to the bucolic setting of Monet's residence, we next visited Versailles. Versailles was formerly a hunting lodge, built by Louis XIII in 1624. Louis XIV expanded the hunting lodge into one of the largest palaces in the world. The Palace covers 37,000 acres and at one time had 1400 fountains. View of garden from Hall of Mirrors. Monday, June 13, 2011. RANDOM SHOTS OF PEOPLE. Friday, April 22 was our last day in China. We left our hotel at 7:30 am to get ahead of rush hour traffic. It had rained overnight so the streets were wet and the sky was overcast. Our motor coach took us to the station to catch the Maglev Train which would transport us to Pudong International Airport. Here are some facts about the Maglev Train:. The Maglev travels at a top speed of about 430 km (267 miles) per hour. This is our last full day in China.
GARDENS BY T: January 2010

Saturday, January 30, 2010. Wow, it's so difficult to get back into the swing of things after the holidays. Thanksgiving and Christmas were so enjoyable. I loved spending time with family. We talked, we played games, we opened gifts, we laughed, we cooked, we ate and we ate, and we ate. Is it possible to have a get together without a table laden with food in our midst? Now it's the end of January. It's back to work, it's back to the gym, it's back to eating sensibly again. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
GARDENS BY T: July 2010

Saturday, July 17, 2010. I mentioned in my last post that I'm leafing through old gardening magazines. I'm coming across loads of useful information. One of my gardening friends who lives in the country happened to mention how much she dreads encountering a snake. The next day, I read a tidbit about repelling animals.for snakes, ring your garden with sisal rope. Snakes won't crawl across it. Sunday, July 11, 2010. More on Bird of Paradise. From a 1994 edition of "Horticulture":. Native of South Africa.
