A collection of thoughts and photos of my life and work in the northern Great Plains of North America (and occasionally other places in the world). Wednesday, October 8, 2014. Links to this post. Sunday, October 5, 2014. Yesterday I received a report of an immature Red-throated Loon at Lake Elmo State Park, which is just a few minutes away from my house. A collection of thoughts and photos of my life and work in the northern Great Plains of North America (and occasionally other places in the world). Friday, April 25, 2014. This Pronghorn wandered through, had a bite to eat on a sagebrush, scratched an itch, expressed his opinion, and wandered over the edge of the hill. Links to this post. Sage-gr...

Arctic Tern - A Life of Ice, Light and Flight. We were there because of the icebergs. This area is a frequent stop of tour ships because the currents and islands conspire to push icebergs into this area where they slowly decay into constantly changing abstract sculptures. Ramblings about Birding in the Helena, MT area, around Montana and other parts of the country with occasional forays into Dragonflies and Family. More Birds of The Gambia. While the birds we encountered in The Gambia were not generally as colorful as those in Ecuador, they were certainly no slackers! While not overly colorful, the Egyptian Plover is a highly sought after species because of its rarity. Its lack of bright colors is more than made up for by its very regal appearance. The Red-billed Firefinc...

Ramblings about Birding in the Helena, MT area, around Montana and other parts of the country with occasional forays into Dragonflies and Family. These handsome birds were strutting their stuff in the foothills of the Sapphire Mountains east of Hamilton last spring. I happened upon them while searching for blue(Dusky) grouse in an area where I once worked on a graduate student study. Turkeys were not present in that area back in the late 1960's when I spent lots of time there. Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Ramblings about Birding in the Helena, MT area, around Montana and other parts of the country with occasional forays into Dragonflies and Family. On my first "exploration" of the 2-acre wooded property that my daughter and her husband bought in Kent, WA, I noted that the previous owner had erected at least 4 large nest boxes that looked as though they might be suitable for small owls. I ran down the basement to get my telephoto lens for my camera, that I already had in hand. Rather than risk going ou...

Ramblings about Birding in the Helena, MT area, around Montana and other parts of the country with occasional forays into Dragonflies and Family. The Gambia: The Banjul Ferry. Ferries that make the run. As we departed our bus, our guides seemed to have some "pull" with the local enforcement folks and we were allowed to move closer to the gate that held the vehicles and people at bay. The trip across the river mouth was uneventful, although thoughts of what a rouge wave washing over the un-gated bow of th...
