If I want to fill up on calories without emptying my purse, then my weekly shopping basket starts to resemble a cross between a school vending machine (if that's not a contradiction in terms in the post-Jamie Oliver world of school food) and Wimpy: sugary, processed, full of refined carbs, fatty. White bread not brown. Fatty meats not lean. Battered fish not fresh. White pasta not wholemeal. It pays to eat badly. Gulp.

Bread pudding is really easy to make. It’s also a really great base that you can add pretty much anything to. I added raisins, but apples, white chocolate chips, pear and fresh berries would all be delicious additions to this recipe. 1 1/2 c unflavored toast crackers. 1 1/2 c milk. 1/2 c brown sugar. 1/2 c white sugar. Spread the toast crackers and raisins evenly in the bottom of a greased baking dish. Cream together the eggs, sugars and spices. Stir in the milk gradually, adding a little at a time.
