Jane's Journey: Being Fearless
http://janeels.blogspot.com/2015/06/being-fearless.html
Tuesday, June 30, 2015. Yesterday in bible study we talked briefly about being fearless. In our delicious mixture of women we have some who have been in jail, and some who have visited there and even a few who have never been anywhere more contentious than a difficult PTA meeting. God loves to arrange us in these interesting groups then sit back and see what we do with each other. In this case we just love each other up one side and down the other. It means you can be brave and honest. He told me early i...

Jane's Journey: Memorial Day PS
http://janeels.blogspot.com/2015/05/memorial-day-ps.html
Sunday, May 24, 2015. My blog last week was light-hearted and dismissive about Memorial Day. Then a young woman spoke during the prayer section of worship this morning. She spoke of taking “the class” for wives whose husbands are headed to the war zone. In her case, Afghanistan. They told her what she could expect if her husband was killed. Later, after church, a woman my age told of her husband serving in Viet Nam. She recounted the same thing. I need to apologize for the insensitivity that a secure lif...

Jane's Journey: Au Revoir
http://janeels.blogspot.com/2015/05/au-revoir.html
Tuesday, May 26, 2015. My, how time flies when you’re having fun. I looked back at my first post to this blog and found out it was July of 2005- almost ten years ago. And, with just a few exceptions to repeat a classic when I was out of town or had writer’s block, I’ve pretty much had something here every single week. In most jobs after ten years you get three weeks’ vacation. I started the blog with the intent to discipline myself and exercise my writing muscles. I can put this in the blog! So, I’...

Jane's Journey: Great is Thy Faithfulness
http://janeels.blogspot.com/2015/05/great-is-thy-faithfulness.html
Wednesday, May 20, 2015. Great is Thy Faithfulness. Here at my house we wage the two most common battles every family faces:. We both weigh more than we should and we always manage to spend more money than we should. One day I proposed a solution that would kill two birds with one stone:. We could just stop buying food. It made perfect sense to me. Beaven thought the idea needed a little more work. Some families watch sports on TV. Who are we memorializing? I would be a whole lot more respectful. My ance...

Jane's Journey: Fluffing Out
http://janeels.blogspot.com/2012/01/fluffing-out.html
Tuesday, January 17, 2012. The first time I took it out for a stroll down memory lane was when Elizabeth was about 6 years old. I’m not sure what the occasion was—probably nothing more than the boredom of a housewife with a small child. It doesn’t take much to entertain people like that. 8221; I glowed in happiness that she was impressed with this family heirloom. Reality in the form of a six-year old child stepped in: “ What a NEAT box! The dress went back inside the magic boxes for another few years.

Jane's Journey: Wild About Harry
http://janeels.blogspot.com/2007/07/wild-about-harry.html
Wednesday, July 25, 2007. Have you noticed how quiet it’s been lately? I feel part of a great community—a worldwide community of people who were and continue to be doing the same exact thing at the same time. I wonder how long we will travel our separate ways until we’re allowed to show our heads and ask who has finished so we might discuss it. Is a week too long? That left me with nobody to talk to. I couldn’t even discuss page numbers. Finally yesterday Beaven went into Dallas for lunch w...I have yet ...

Jane's Journey: Praying the Hot Flashes
http://janeels.blogspot.com/2011/03/praying-hot-flashes.html
Tuesday, March 22, 2011. Praying the Hot Flashes. As my physical body ages and weakens I want to strengthen my spiritual life. I’ve known older women who were bedfast but whose prayers I coveted more than material riches. I hope to move into that important role when it’s my turn. But terms like “evening” and “night” seemed sort of willy-nilly and haphazard to me. For goodness sakes if you’re going to do this by times then. Who knows evening from night? Hey, if the Catholics or Presbyterians would just in...

Jane's Journey: Casper Supreme
http://janeels.blogspot.com/2015/08/casper-supreme.html
Saturday, August 01, 2015. I'm home from my three week camp marathon. Starting with the first one, here is how I spent my summer so far:. When they asked me to spend a week as the bible study leader at Camp Gilmont I said "Sure! I needed to explain that the term comes from German word "Geist" which means both "spirit" and "ghost." So you can see the problem. I've just never been a fan of telling kids we believe in ghosts, holy or otherwise- at least not without an explanation. Be the Game Board. As promi...

Jane's Journey: Pardon My Flag
http://janeels.blogspot.com/2015/06/pardon-my-flag.html
Thursday, June 25, 2015. I’m here to talk about how my daughters went through high school with a mascot built around the Civil War’s hero, the Southern Colonel, with the Confederate Battle Flag as their emblem. I’m not here to defend it. God, no. I find it as morally repugnant as everyone. I merely find it interesting that some people have peacefully coexisted with it for years without even noticing it. When the city fathers planned the school it was on the southern edge of town and the land was still fa...

Jane's Journey: The Best Worst Organist Ever
http://janeels.blogspot.com/2012/06/musical-jello.html
Tuesday, June 19, 2012. The Best Worst Organist Ever. Few things bring a church congregation together like a shared adversity. It’s usually something tragic like a death or maybe something hard like a budget crisis or busted air conditioner. Everyone shares the tough experience and bonds with each other like mad. But a couple of Sundays ago it was the guest organist. Those of us who were in attendance that day are thinking of having t-shirts printed. The guy last week wasn’t. When it looked like we would...
