The Legends of Konocti . Geologists believe that Mt Konocti, a dormant volcano, first erupted 350,000 years ago, and as recently as 10,000 years ago. Geothermal activity still abounds in the area, evidenced by numerous sulphuric springs which drew thousands of tourists and health-seekers in the early 1900s. Though European settlers attempted to change Mt. Konocti's name to Uncle Sam Mountain in 1854, the original name has endured. In August 2008, the County of Lake opened escrow on one parcel (#5 on map below), consisting of 176 acres with communication towers on Buckingham Peak for the sum of $1.2 million. The County also entered into an Option to Purchase Agreement of an additional 1344 acres on Mt. Konocti, for a purchase price of $2.6 million. In September 2011, the County closed escrow on the property, and officially opened the Mt Konocti County Park. Mount Konocti County Park. Is currently open for day-use hiking.
