Project MIDAS | A growing rift on Larsen C

http://www.projectmidas.org/blog/a-growing-rift-in-larsen-c

A growing rift on Larsen C. By Adrian Luckman, Daniela Jansen, Martin O'Leary and the MIDAS team. August 18, 2016. For almost two years now, we have been tracking the progress of a large rift in the Larsen C Ice Shelf. This rift, which may threaten the stability of Larsen C, has grown significantly and rapidly during the Antarctic polar night, which is now coming to an end. As of August 2016, the rift is now 22km longer than when satellites were last able to observe it in March of this year.

Impact of Melt on Ice Shelf Dynamics And Stability. One last blog from the south. Life has been very hectic since my last blog ten days ago and we are now all back at Rothera. We got held up by high winds and snow at site E for a further five days before eventually making the last long haul to D to join our science kit. Continue reading "One last blog from the south". December 10, 2015. November 30, 2015. Al, our GA, warned us that the first thing we will notice when we get back to Rothera is how much ea...

Project MIDAS | About

http://www.projectmidas.org/about

Project MIDAS is a UK-based Antarctic research project, investigating the effects of a warming climate on the Larsen C ice shelf in West Antarctica. Recent warming has caused large melt ponds to form on Larsen C during summer, which are changing the structure of the ice. The effects of this on the future of the ice shelf are still unknown. We are studying these effects through a mixture of fieldwork, satellite observation and computer simulations of the ice shelf and its climate.

Project MIDAS | Larsen C Ice Shelf poised to calve

http://www.projectmidas.org/blog/larsen-c-ice-shelf-poised-to-calve

Larsen C Ice Shelf poised to calve. By Adrian Luckman and the MIDAS team. January 5, 2017. The Larsen C Ice shelf in Antarctica is primed to shed an area of more than 5000 sq. km following further substantial rift growth. After a few months of steady, incremental advance since the last event, the rift grew suddenly by a further 18 km during the second half of December 2016. Only a final 20 km of ice now connects an iceberg one quarter the size of Wales to its parent ice shelf. The MIDAS Project will cont...

La piattaforma Larsen C è pronta per staccarsi dall’Antartico. – Stay Sustainable

https://staysustainable.wordpress.com/2017/01/07/la-piattaforma-larsen-c-e-pronta-per-staccarsi-dallantartico

Posted in Climate Changes.

Antarctic Iceberg - hpps-science-environment.simplesite.com

Earth and Its Environment. Whats Next for us? Huge Antarctic iceberg poised to break away. By Matt McGrathEnvironment correspondent. From the section Science and Environment. An iceberg expected to be one of the 10 largest ever recorded is ready to break away from Antarctica, scientists say. A long-running rift in the Larsen C ice shelf grew suddenly in December and now just 20km of ice is keeping the 5,000 sq km piece from floating away. Larsen C is the most northern major ice shelf in Antarctica. There...

Project Micra | Tales from developing Project Micra

Tales from developing Project Micra. Results up to 2014. All in a weekends work. For the first time in ages, I have spent the whole weekend working on the rally car! As ever there was of course a list of jobs to be done, and as happens this list got added to during the course of doing the other jobs. As can be seen above the race ‘rain’ light is now fitted and working. The 3rd high level brake light is also now fitted and working. A look at the gear selector mechanism helped explain some of the gear sele...
