Work of the hand. Tuesday, November 23, 2010. What happiness feels like". Last week, wonderful art: at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, there was a Wayne Thiebaud retrospective. He turned 90 on November 15, and he still paints AND plays tennis every day! Maybe the most satisfying museum show ever: most delicious paint. In 2001 in the NY Times,. More images here (the insert from NY Times looks excessively garish here). Many post-impressionist treasures were visiting from the Musee d'Orsay in Paris.

I met loads of interesting folks, and one talented woodworker in particular stood out from the crowd: James Oliver. He just sent me photos of his tool chest:. Western maple carcass, cherry and hickory tills, the top edges of the runners are ipe. Bottom is t&g pine". Nice work, James! Thursday, May 15, 2014. Installati...

The Joiner's Apprentice: July 2014
http://www.thejoinersapprentice.com/2014_07_01_archive.html
Ethical woodworking, the old-fashioned way. Wednesday, July 16, 2014. The cedar boards used for the new back started like this:. But after staining, shellacing, and waxing, they almost look at home:. Not a lot I can do about the door wood not really matching the interior desk surface, but it is all cleaned up and refinished and nicely smooth to the touch. The new hardware works great. The drawers are waxed and operate smoothly. This thing is ready for another hundred years of use and abuse.

The Joiner's Apprentice: June 2014
http://www.thejoinersapprentice.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
Ethical woodworking, the old-fashioned way. Monday, June 30, 2014. We saw a drawer needing a new bottom. Now, we see the case needing a new back. Looks kindof cool with no back, but that is not so functional. All the envelopes and stamps and paperclips this is meant to be stuffed with would fall right out and then when the Roomba came to sweep the floor, it would jam and play some weird chimes. So what about the existing back? Here you can see a bit more of the damage, as well as the rot setting in.

Ethical woodworking, the old-fashioned way. Sunday, February 22, 2015. I was too busy prepping the panels to take many photos, but it is rather straightforward construction. Loosely based on the Japanese tool box. I did some quick curves on the sides while she was playing with a friend. I don't know if I even want her to know the drawknife exists yet. The curve is just a traced metal tin that I had laying around and happened to fit nicely. We still need to work on the handle, but the shop was cold and sh...

Ethical woodworking, the old-fashioned way. Monday, August 25, 2014. The Broken Chisel and the Shameless Birdhouse. The kid came into the shop during this procedure, and I tried showing her what I was doing. Then it was time to do the chopping, which I knew she would not enjoy. Still, she insisted. so I gave her some earmuffs, and it was all going ok, until. Using a technique Robert Wearing discusses in The Essential Woodworker. I like to make a series of shallow scores with the chisel, and then drag the...

Tyler Street: Aphrodite Gets Around
http://tyler-street.blogspot.com/2009/08/aphrodite-gets-around.html
Work of the hand. Sunday, August 9, 2009. Watching a documentary in which Rosamund Bernier talks about "The Matisse I Knew" and then "The Matisse Nobody Knew" I caught a glimpse of a 1919 Matisse painting that includes a familiar torso! In hunting it down on-line last night, I found that the Matisse painting lives in Sao Paulo now. I also found this Chirico, called "The Uncertainty of the Poet" (Tate, London). The Tate also has Penrose's sculpture, "The Last Voyage of Captain Cook.". Report from the field.
