PyPap

Monday, December 7, 2009. A Ruby book worth reading for Pythonistas. It's been a while since I've ready an entire technical book over the weekend. But I enjoyed Design Patterns in Ruby. So much that I kept picking it up for "one more chapter". When the book arrived late Thursday I skipped straight to the DSL chapter, which was interesting. But then I started reading it from the beginning. Chapter 1 talks about design patterns, the book Design Patterns. Program to an interface, not an implementation.

PyPap: January 2009

http://pypap.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html

Thursday, January 8, 2009. Book Review: Python Web Development with Django. Back in April 2008 I eagerly volunteered to review a “rough cut” of Python Web Development with Django. By Jeff Forcier, Paul Bissex, and Wesley Chun when I read of the opportunity on the BayPIGgies. To a “real” blog, and I will update this review as I read other chapters more carefully then. Which I’ll refer to as TheDjangoBook below) and I won’t be able to resist comparing it to Python Web Development with Django (w...The secon...

PyPap: June 2008

http://pypap.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html

Wednesday, June 4, 2008. Django multiple database API proposal. I finally wrote up the multiple database API I proposed at the Django sprint at PyCon 2008, in a post to the django-developers mailing list. Hopefully I'll soon be able to finish the coding I began then and finally create a working patch so the community can play with it and test it. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). PyPap: String Interpolation

http://pypap.blogspot.com/2008/03/string-interpolation.html

Wednesday, March 26, 2008. One of the prerequisites for recipe #1 ("Ruby-style string interpolation") from the Frame Hacks. Section of the "Secrets of the Framework Creators". PyCon tutorial is the string.Template. Class Before I took the tutorial I was vaguely aware of the string.Template class, but I don't think I've ever used it. I'm going to consider using it though. There are probably plenty of cases where it would be more readable than using the % operator. Name, place =. The solution for step 2 of...

MACitus: January 2011

http://macitus.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html

Sunday, January 30, 2011. Next install is FastScripts. I've accumulated a number of AppleScripts, mainly for making iTunes a little easier to us. Some of them I run so frequently that I like invoke them using a keyboard shortcut. I find FastScripts. Very convenient for that. Here are my iTunes AppleScripts:. I deselect tracks (often as part of a multiple selection) so frequently that I've assigned this to ⌘0. Go To 0 Spoken Word for iPhone. Go To New Podcasts for iPhone. MACitus: Make It Short

http://macitus.blogspot.com/2011/02/make-it-short.html

Friday, February 25, 2011. If you use Safari, have a look at the Make It Short. URL shortener Safari extension. When I need a shortened URL in my clipboard, this Safari extension is the quickest and most convenient way I've found to get it there. It can be configured to work with shortening services. I like bit.ly. And I like how I can configure Make It Short to use my bit.ly API key. While you're at junecloud.com. Have a look at their other excellent tools: Delivery Status touch. MACitus: Time Machine FAQ FTW!

http://macitus.blogspot.com/2011/01/time-machine-faq-ftw.html

Sunday, January 30, 2011. Time Machine FAQ FTW! I couldn't figure out how to use Migration Assistant to copy data from the Time Machine backup of my MacBook Pro to my new MacBook Air. I gave up and turned to this Time Machine FAQ: http:/ web.me.com/pondini/Time Machine/FAQ.html. Question 17: "How can I see my backups, or the Backups for a different Mac? And question 16: "How can I restore a file/folder to an alternate location? Told me all I needed to know to restore my iTunes data. Time Machine FAQ FTW!

MACitus: Divvy, the window management utility I was looking for

http://macitus.blogspot.com/2011/02/divvy-window-management-utility-i-was.html

Sunday, February 6, 2011. Divvy, the window management utility I was looking for. But Mac Win Man (MWM), the one utility I found, was much more complicated that what I was looking for, so I abandoned my search. Then my friend Ian Chesal. Mentioned something called Divvy. And I checked it out. It gives me just what I needed, even though it doesn't give me what I wanted. It's better than what I wanted. It's much more Mac-like. Check out the video at mizage.com/divvy. And see if you agree.

yacitus: A Family Holiday Tradition

http://yacitus.blogspot.com/2010/12/family-holiday-tradition.html

Saturday, December 11, 2010. A Family Holiday Tradition. My daughter had a school assignment to write a story about a family holiday tradition, and to collect stories from everyone else in her family. This is what I wrote for her:. I don't recall ever having a Christmas without snow. So it was a shock for me when I came to California and saw people put up lights with no snow. I just always assumed the two go together. I had memorized every present under the tree before we left, so I knew they weren't the...

Friday, July 10, 2009. Two pitchers won this week without throwing a pitch. Two MLB pitchers won games this week without throwing a single pitch. Alan Embree won Wednesday for the Rockies. Pirates right-hander Joel Hanrahan won without even being at the game. In fact, he won without even playing for the winning team. He was the pitcher of record. The game finally resumed Thursday with Washington winning, 11-10, in 11 innings. Links to this post. Friday, July 3, 2009. Children of the Mind. The feature in ...

http://yacitus.blogspot.com/2014/08/baseball-trip-of-half-century-lifetime.html

Tuesday, August 26, 2014. Baseball Trip of a (Half-Century) Lifetime. If you're a friend on Facebook, you may have seen photos and updates during the trip I just completed with my sons. About a year ago, my wife suggested I take a trip to visit multiple ballparks to celebrate my 50th birthday (this September). I certainly didn't forget her idea, and from August 2 through 17 I made the idea a reality. I'll spare you the suspense. Here is my overall ranking of ballparks, most favorite first:. http://macitus.blogspot.com/2011/02/busycal-really-is-like-ical-pro.html

Saturday, February 12, 2011. BusyCal really is like iCal Pro. I've installed plenty more applications on my MacBook Air, but now that I'm using it at work (and no longer have my MacBook Pro) and now that I've started my new job, I haven't had much time for blogging. But the first application that occurs to me that I haven't blogged about is BusyCal. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Disabling the Front Row keyboard shortcut. BusyCal really is like iCal Pro. Monday, November 14, 2016. I have a hypothetical question for you. But Bob never got along with the executive board (who oversee the day-to-day operation of the preschool- the rest of the board just votes at annual meetings). Most of the executive board recommended someone else eight years ago, and for various reasons never accepted Bob. The board seems to be split. Most members agree that Hannah is better with kids, but about half are excited about Dan's plans for the preschool. Several say they...

Tuesday, January 11, 2011. But I’m leaving Netflix. Even so, making the decision to leave Netflix was one of the most difficult I’ve ever had to make. I even initially turned down the offer, before realizing just how excited I was by the work I’d be doing. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
