Teaching Pysankarstvo

http://www.pysanky.info/Teaching/Poem.html

I have a lovely pysanka,. The nicest that I’ve ever seen. Mother helped a little bit. But I colored it myself. I drew a wondrous bird. And eight small crosses,. Several tiny fir trees.

Divisions

Traditional pysanka divisions (watercolor by Binyashevsky, 1968). When analyzing a pysanka’s pattern, the first things which need to be teased out are its axes of symmetry, or how the design elements are lain out on the surface of the egg. What is the scaffolding upon which the design will be constructed, and into which the design motifs will be placed? There is no commonly accepted nomenclature for these archetypes, nor even a standard set. Erast Binyashevsky, in The Ukrainian Pysanka. Joanna Luciow enu...

Blogging about Ukrainian Easter Eggs .Really! Friday, December 01, 2006. Eggs break and crack. It’s an unhappy fact of life. You put hours of work into a pysanka only to discover, as you’re finishing, a crack. What to do? I've had to deal with cracked and broken eggs both when making and when teaching pysanky. I've written about the approaches I use to "save" pysanky on my website here. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Pysanka: December 2006

http://mypysanka.blogspot.com/2006_12_01_archive.html

Blogging about Ukrainian Easter Eggs .Really! Thursday, December 28, 2006. Last year, in late November, I found I had a lot of small eggs left over from pysanka making. Casting about for something to do with them, I came upon the idea of making snowflake pysanky. I'd seen them before on other sites, so decided to try my hand at them. The snowflakes came out quite nice. I attached small findings to them, and then gave them away to friends and family. This year created a whole bunch more.

Deciduous Dryad: June 2013

http://deciduousdryad.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html

Wednesday, June 26, 2013. One of the things I do for a living (if you can call something I've rarely been paid to do "for a living") is making crafts: jewelry, dolls, and pysanky at the moment. I learned this at Pennsic around a dozen years ago, and I've made batches of them periodically ever since. I've only taught my class in it twice, but there are others in my area who know more than I do and actually have the heritage and/or persona to match, so I tend to defer to them at Academies. Pysanky, and all...
