quiet journey: mali 5: on the boat

http://quietjourney.blogspot.com/2006/10/mali-5-on-boat.html

October 08, 2006. Mali 5: on the boat. It was on the afternoon of the second day that we saw the hippos just off the side of the boat - i couldn't get my camera out in time to photograph them, but there were 3 or so paddling around, surfacing, submersing, and it was very cool. everyone else was excited as well, i think. 1 a town we passed that looks like an oasis. 2 again, a town in the middle of nowhere and a tremendous mud mosque towering over it. Alex gets fitted for a turban - from this point onward, he would constantly be considered muslim, which lent us great credibility! I'm not sure which of these slogans is better: "timbuktu, city of 333 saints"? Or "timbuktu the mysterious"? No - actually, i think those are precisely the reasons. Posted by Jon @ 17:45. prosaist liberation front: December 2004

http://prosaist.blogspot.com/2004_12_01_archive.html

Friday, December 03, 2004. Primo Levi, The Drowned and the Saved (1988). I come now to the third variant of the question: Why didn't you run away "before"? Before the borders were closed? Before the trap snapped shut? Here rises the obligatory question, a counter-question: How securely do we live, we men of the century's and millenium's end? And, more specifically, we Europeans? Are today's fears more or less founded than the fears of that time? Why aren't we leaving our country?
