I’ve been a cyclist most of my adult life (admittedly with some large gaps in my 20s and late 30s) and I toured France and northern Spain a few times as well as tours in Britain and Ireland. Training for the Raid. Day 4 - Oust to Prades. A good overnight stop. Lovely stay in Oust with great restaurant. Much needed. Yet another great descent in the sun (weather fairy REALLY on our side! Then on to lunch at Ax Les Thermes. Good lunch and off again. Training for the Raid. Day 1 - Hendaye to Arudy. Awoke to a clear day in Hendaye and headed for the beach for Le Grand Depart. Lovely dry, still day perfect for cycling. Shame to leave the beach, though! The odd mechanical the early on, but nothing serious. Some of the scenery today has been wonderful but we know we’ve much more to come. The largest climb was Col d’Osquich at just 500m. Day two involves a number of 1500m plus cols. Day 5 - Prades to Cerbère. Day 4 - Oust to Prades.

Muscles (and bums) ready for a rest day tomorrow. Just the last 60 miles to complete the task. We have until 2:15pm (given that we started at 10:15am on Saturday) to reach the beach at Cerbère, where we will enjoy a leisurely lunch. Stats: 60 miles, 2182 ft. ascent. The route climbs 18 cols totaling 36,000ft (11,000 metres). Of ascent over its 450 miles (720km). It has been an ambition for a number of years and I began hatching a plan to do a RAID after reading Graham Fife’s wonderful book The Beautiful Machine a few years ago.
