Iquique: Failure Fantastico! | allison.goes.sud
https://allisongoessud.wordpress.com/2011/02/16/iquique-failure-fantastico
Starting off 2011 fittingly–up in the air. Iquique: Beach City of Chile. I booked a bed ahead of time in Iquique at place called La Casona 120. The online reviews were ok and I didn’t expect much, which I ve found to be a great strategy in general. I ended up loving it! The rooms were small and hot, but the location was perfect and the place is a magnet for cool, fun, interesting people. How about I m not going up thousands of feet in the area with a brokedown parachute? The Miami of Chile? The people at...

https://allisongoessud.wordpress.com/2011/03/27/the-bathroom-face-awards-worst-of-south-america-2011
Starting off 2011 fittingly–up in the air. The Bathroom Face Awards – Worst of South America 2011. I laughed, I cried, I’d do it again and again. But not everything. Although 95 percent of my trip was wonderful, there was a certain 5 percent that I could have lived without…but then I wouldn’t have the good stories! In no particular order, the much-anticipated 2011 Bathroom Face Awards. Biggest Rip-Off: Kayaking in Chepu, Chiloe. And the enchanted landscape that my Lonely Planet raved about? That too....

5 Days of ¨Couch Potatoes¨ | allison.goes.sud
https://allisongoessud.wordpress.com/2011/02/06/5-days-of-¨couch-potatoes¨
Starting off 2011 fittingly–up in the air. 5 Days of Couch Potatoes. After some blissful days of wandering around Valparaiso deep in thought, it was time to rejoin the social world and head to Santiago. I had very low expectations of Santiago. It sounded pretty boring from what I had heard, but I decided to go because I knew some people who lived there (from my stay in Buenos Aires) and it was on the way to Mendoza. Main plaza of Santiago. One of the best surprises of Santiago was discovering what I m su...

Final Week on the Road: The Sacred Valley | allison.goes.sud
https://allisongoessud.wordpress.com/2011/02/27/final-week-on-the-road-the-sacred-valley
Starting off 2011 fittingly–up in the air. Final Week on the Road: The Sacred Valley. My final week of on-the-road travel is about to wrap up. You might think I feel sad about this, but in reality I’m excited. In just a few days, I will be back in Buenos Aires in a place of my own. And one where I hopefully won’t have to wear flip flops in the shower. This week has been intense! Monastery built on Inca ruins. On our second day we decided to get out of town and have a DIY adventure to the nearby ruins....

Best of South America 2011 | allison.goes.sud
https://allisongoessud.wordpress.com/2011/03/10/best-of-south-america-2011
Starting off 2011 fittingly–up in the air. Best of South America 2011. Best of South America. May be a bit grandiose, considering I visited only one fourth of the continent’s countries. But in no particular order, here are the winners of the much-coveted Allison.Goes.Sud awards:. BEST MAJOR CITY: Valparaiso, Chile. Honorable Mention: Buenos Aires. BEST SMALL CITY: Tigre, Argentina. Tigre has a lot going for it. First, it’s easily accessible from Buenos Aires. BEST TOWN/VILLAGE: Ollantaytambo, Peru. Has a...

Switchback | allison.goes.sud
https://allisongoessud.wordpress.com/2011/01/25/switchback
Starting off 2011 fittingly–up in the air. So, with a few more days to kill than I had originally intended, I headed back to southern Chile. It was bugging me that I had skipped the island of Chiloe, which was one of my top destinations…so my shifted itinerary provided a good excuse to backtrack and be completely inefficient. Luckily a few other people were in my spot and there was a dodgy local bus willing to take us into town. And of course, it was rainy and cold. My accommodations in Puerto Varas were...

Lady of the Canyon | allison.goes.sud
https://allisongoessud.wordpress.com/2011/01/23/lady-of-the-canyon
Starting off 2011 fittingly–up in the air. Lady of the Canyon. After a fairly adventurous weekend in Valdivia, I amped it up for some real outdoor adventure about three hours north in a small town called Pucon. Pucon is known as one of the best places to do adventure sports in South America…and for good reason! The town sits at the base of a huge active volcano, and is surrounded by giant craggy mountains and freezing cold rivers. Scene from the side streets of Pucon, in a rare sunny moment. One of my ca...

What´s Cooler Than Being Cool? | allison.goes.sud
https://allisongoessud.wordpress.com/2011/01/22/what´s-cooler-than-being-cool
Starting off 2011 fittingly–up in the air. What s Cooler Than Being Cool? Or, well, Chile. Yes, Chile is actually very chilly. I spend about 80% of my time here being cold and most likely damp. The good news is that the rain is not dehabilitating…it s more of a constant drizzle and mist. So, although it s not ideal, it hasn t stopped me from still seeing quite a bit. About six hours later, I arrived in Valdivia. I splurged and didn t stay at a hostel, but at an inexpensive guesthouse. It was comp...In hi...

Let There Be Light | allison.goes.sud
https://allisongoessud.wordpress.com/2011/02/03/let-there-be-light
Starting off 2011 fittingly–up in the air. Let There Be Light. Sorry for going a bit AWOL for the past days…there is a direct relationship between how anti-social I am being and how often I post, and this past week I have hung up my solo travel chaps and joined some people for a bit. But first, let me back up and tell you about Valparaiso! After two weeks of rainy drizzle and cold that never left my body, it was a huge relief to be back in the sun again. View from my hostel room. Almost to the bottom.
