At the end of last week, my husband finally emerged from under a pile of tests and report cards. So on Saturday we decided to celebrate by going on a hike at Rattlesnake Point Conservation Area. There were several interpretive panels at the Pinnacle Lookout explaining geological and natural history of the area. We d...

Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air. – Ralph Waldo Emerson. The Best of 2016. December 29, 2016. It’s hard to believe 2016 is drawing to a close. And it was quite a year when it comes to outdoor adventures, both close and far. With a three-week road trip. All the way to Los Angeles, lots of camping with family and friends, my first solo trip and endless microadventures. It is next to impossible to narrow down ten best. But I’ll still try. Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air. – Ralph Waldo Emerson. From despair to hope with friends and nature. November 19, 2016. There is a mural along Lawrence Avenue in Toronto that I pass on my way home. It depicts human impact on the planet culminating in apocalyptic vision of the future. Did wonders for my knees). And, of course, there is the Baby, although technically she is now a toddler. Our son inspired by all the woodwork around spent a good chunk of his time wood carving. Trail ...

Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air. – Ralph Waldo Emerson. Our glamping weekend at Pinery. December 14, 2016. December 14, 2016. The end of November and beginning of December is a festive time in our family complete with two birthdays and a wedding anniversary. This year we decided to celebrate the way we enjoy most by going camping, or should I say glamping. I combed through the Ontario Parks website and managed to book a yurt at Pinery Provincial Park. We then set out on the Cedar T...

Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air. – Ralph Waldo Emerson. Ringing in the new year without a bang: our quiet celebration in Gatineau Park. January 10, 2017. When we moved to Canada, we kept those traditions going for a few years but without all the hoopla around it got old pretty fast. So we decided to create our own traditions, and headed into the woods, of course. And, back at Killarney. Last year. This year we decided to try a new place — Gatineau Park. We decided to go with a four...

Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air. – Ralph Waldo Emerson. Hiking at Mount Nemo and Our First Snow of the Winter. December 24, 2015. August 12, 2016. A few weeks ago and decided it was time to take a closer look. We started with the South Loop and soon reached the edge of the cliff lined with ancient cedars (some of them are over 1,000 years old). We didn’t risk going too close to the edge since the ground was slippery (and it’s not a good practice anyway). Hikes close to Toronto.

Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air. – Ralph Waldo Emerson. We are going on a treasure hunt: geocaching and hiking at Mount Nemo and Rattlesnake Point. November 30, 2016. People sometimes ask me how we choose locations for our microadventures. For the record, I am not anti Pokémon Go. At least it gets people outside (although I am not sure if it’s even a thing anymore). I just think geocaching is way more fun. How we headed for Mount Nemo and ended up at Rattlesnake Point. But that was...

Bruce Trail, snow and lime | Gone Camping

Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air. – Ralph Waldo Emerson. Bruce Trail, snow and lime. December 24, 2016. December 24, 2016. Our latest microadventures had three things in common: snow, Bruce Trail and lime (as in construction material, not fruit). Why lime? Devil’s Pulpit and the Hoffman Lime Kiln Ruins. It was a bit chilly that day but we quickly warmed up. The trail is only 2.6 kilometres long but with a 100-metre elevation change it is a non-ending series of upward climbs ...Somew...
