Learning something new on each and every brevet. Sunday, September 9, 2012. On the Roadside Again. Le 1000 du Sud 2012. September 5 - 8. Certainly did not think of randonneuring when he sang "And I can't wait to get on the road again." But I did think of his song when I picked the title for this post. So there is both forward-looking envy and some melancholia in my mind as I am writing this. Looking back into Life is not perfect. At least, I managed to participate again in this year's 1000 du Sud. Randonneur Apprentice: A Horse of a Different Colour

http://randonneurapprentice.blogspot.com/2010/05/horse-of-different-colour.html

Learning something new on each and every brevet. Wednesday, May 12, 2010. A Horse of a Different Colour. Clambake 1000", April 29 - May 1, 2010. The title refers to Eric Fergusson's note. Which includes the above picture) about the particular position of the 1000 km brevet distance. Quoted: You might call it randonneur cycling's ugly duckling. the black sheep of the brevet family. neither fish nor fowl. -. So what is so special about this distance? Day 1 (Pismo Beach - King City, 226 miles). As soon as w...

Randonneur Apprentice: Riding off into the Golden Years

http://randonneurapprentice.blogspot.com/2011/04/riding-off-into-golden-years.html

Learning something new on each and every brevet. Thursday, April 7, 2011. Riding off into the Golden Years. Wine and Waves" 400k, March 12, 2011. OK, it's time to admit it: I finally went into retirement, on March 3rd. Nearly everybody who knows me imagines that ever since I am spending all my time riding the bicycle - but that's not how it works! Celebrating retirement at Hardy's Bavaria. Note the Bavarian colors. And some "retirement balloons" in the bedroom:. All this didn't distract me from getting i...

Randonneur Apprentice: Mind Games

http://randonneurapprentice.blogspot.com/2011/09/mind-games.html

Learning something new on each and every brevet. Monday, September 5, 2011. Paris - Brest - Paris, August 21-25, 2011. It's a little stretch to apply the concept of "mind game" to what remains for the me the dominant impression from my PBP 2011 experience; but that's what it was - except for the "deliberate", "on another" and "competitive advantage" parts in the definition above. I played all the mind games on myself - unwittingly. It started earlier this year, when I set up my big goals. From my side, I...

Randonneur Apprentice: Wistfully Upbeat

http://randonneurapprentice.blogspot.com/2011/10/wistfully-upbeat.html

Learning something new on each and every brevet. Tuesday, October 25, 2011. Cannes, towards the end of October 2011. That's pretty serious, after all. While working on recovering enough health to break the vicious cycle of not getting enough exercise, I want to get closer again to the bicycling story in my life. This will provide a better balance between nostalgia and optimistic forward-looking. Here is the first photo of me on a bicycle (note the Lederhosen! It sounds absolutely incredibly nowadays; but...

Randonneur Apprentice: A Fabulous Adventure

http://randonneurapprentice.blogspot.com/2009/10/fabulous-adventure.html

Learning something new on each and every brevet. Friday, October 9, 2009. Endless Mountains 1240 km. It has been a week since I rolled into the finish as a "DNF Finisher", and I am still dreaming every night of this ride. I shouldn't be surprised, because I knew beforehand it would become a new high-water mark in my randonneuring apprenticeship. All I can say now is: the apprenticeship continues! Sent us from that country, where most of the farms had silo towers with astronomy observatories on top:.

KevinF wrote into the SFRandon list last Friday with the following query and then answered his own question. What are your favorite stretches of road in the Bay Area and why? Yeah, I remember riding there. That was great. Hopland grade is another favorite of mine and I resist listing that for the same reason above. 8221; he asked. I don&#...

449 km: Two rocks, no waiting

http://449km.blogspot.com/2014/03/two-rocks-no-waiting.html

Thursday, March 20, 2014. Two rocks, no waiting. Photos courtesy of Patrick. In the gentle landscape between the growing town of Petaluma and the coastline, there is a small, and perhaps mostly forgotten community named Two Rock, CA. Two Rock never became a commercial center, never became the western seat of finance, and in fact the road doesn't even widen as you pass through. Most people can travel along the highway here and never realize they've passed through a town, and never even notice the three.

Wednesday, November 4, 2009. Chasing the sinking sun. I'm wondering why more people don't plunk the money down for even minimal lights. For. Useful lights at REI. Hell, REI will mail them to you if you can't make it to one of their stores, and no doubt dozens of other retailers. Would do the same. Planet Bike is not the only company making better than adequate bike lighting either. Check out Cateye. So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking. Racing around to come up behind you again.

449 km: A Model ride

http://449km.blogspot.com/2014/08/a-model-ride.html

Wednesday, August 20, 2014. It is now April and I've managed to go more than three months without riding a permanent route. That is three months in Winter! And a return via Amtrak. The route first began life as a DART route when The Davis Bike Club. Hosted their first ever DART event in November of 2012. The route morphed into a permanent route later that year and in the coming year it will be a brevet route, part of another SFR double brevet weekend (used mostly to help train up for PBP). It might not b...
