Washburn, and 40th anniversary celebration. From the trailhead, we begin our steady climb to the top of the mountain. We’re headed for the fire station at the Summit. On the way we encounter snow on the trail. It’s July 20, and there is still snow on the mountain. The trail is steep. It is a journey back in geologic time.

The body of the young man missing since Aug 11, has been recovered. Late Friday searchers spotted what the thought was a submerged body pinned to a large rock in a very steep and dangerous section of the Yellowstone River, about 1/4 mile downstream from where the young man was last seen. I fished lakes and streams and caught more fish than I could count. Lake, cutthroat, brown, brook, and rainbow trout; mountain white fish and artic grayling. I’m going to miss Yellowstone! Guess I was too excited. I was on the road at zero dark thirty that is 0500. No Corvette this year, I took a Jeep Commander with a HEMI engine. Today, we are up and in the car early, for the much anticipated horseback ride. It’s a 90 minute drive to Big Sky from the cabin to Jake’s Horses. We arrive in Big Sky and met up with our guide Fred. Here Suzie atop her mighty steed. Fred clears some dead fall trees that are blocking the trail. We finally get our first looks at Moon Lake. Boy, was I glad to get off that horse!

Only a week after a young man dies, a young girl, 8 yeas old, dies after falling into the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. The girl and family members had parked their vehicle in a trailhead parking area along the North Rim Drive, a short scenic route off the park’s Grand Loop Road near Canyon Village.
