I don't think there are any spoilers following this but just in case - SPOILER ALERT! The effects were indeed special. Kirk got with a green skinned chick. Also acting, direction, and writing were all good. Lens glares - my eyes hurt. A hokey "I'm a doctor, not a." line. Leonard Nimoy narrated the last 30 seconds for no apparent reason. But, yes, a very fine (non-prequel) film indeed.
