Experiments in Fiction

A space to scratch my fiction itch. (I'm Rob.). Page 1 of 1. I hate waiting rooms, mostly for the not-so-subtly implied waiting part. I hate that I have to take time out of my day so that someone ». I can’t remember the last time I felt land, but I can remember its warmth, its texture, the solidness of it. I remember these things ». I was making an omelette when I heard the knock on the door. It was frantic, intense, like someone was trying to beat the door down. ». Death (and a Girl). Page 1 of 1.

Over on Slate is a list of 22 answers for creationists, posted as a response to 22 questions asked by creationists, directed at those who believe in evolution. Each response is thoughtful, kind, and respectful, but forceful in their conviction. Quest…. The Value of Work. Why I (Must) Write. I started writing poetry in grade school. Encouraged by even the slightest praise, I kept writing poems throughout high school&#...

Spotify and Me

http://www.rboone.com/spotify-and-me

In my hometown, just on the other side of a floodwall that runs perpendicular to the Ohio River, lies a small, run-down store that occupied much of my time and thoughts as a teenager. It’s called the Sound Xchange. In it lie treasures untold: racks upon racks of CDs, from Billy Ray Cyrus to Prince to Guns n’ Roses. In the late 90s, a new CD would set you back $16.99. It was a sizable investment, all things considered: 50 bucks net you just three albums. One had to choose carefully. Did you come across it?

The Happy Consumer

http://www.rboone.com/the-happy-consumer

My first concert was a homecoming celebration just on the other side of the river from my hometown, in Parkersburg, West Virginia. There were games and spectacles of the sort you'd expect at such a festival. And because I was nine at the time, those things held my fascination to no end. What I remember most vividly, though, is the concert. The Guess Who (whose band name I later had so much fun relaying to others) had come to town to play their 60s hits- most notably,. And if those things can't be held or...

Attention vs Absorption

http://www.rboone.com/attention-vs-absorption

So many of our days, so much of our society, is built on the idea of battling our very selves. To a certain extent, that's necessary: when left unconstrained, unbounded, we humans can be reckless and downright harmful beasts. We need form, so we build walls. We need structure, so we build segments into time. This whole thought model can be applied to a great many things nearly everything, in fact but today I'm particularly interested in how it applies to attention. Perhaps that's because we're coming at ...

Thinking, Fast and Slow. The excerpt above is a small example of what words can do to our brains. When you're trying to sell something, on a landing page, in a blog post, a press release, or even on Twitter, the words you use and the order in which you put them matter. Good writing is not decoration; as the example illustrates, it informs how we. When we read something. Writing the singer had a velvet voice rouses the sensory cortex. How do your brand's words affect your readers? Want to learn more?

Alexis Madrigal Talks with Pinterest's Evan Sharp

http://sssimpli.com/alexis-madrigal-talks-with-pinterests-evan-sharp

Insightful reads, delightful tools. Alexis Madrigal Talks with Pinterest's Evan Sharp. Friday, August 01, 2014. My contention is that Pinterest is one of the four ways that people find things on the Internet. The default, of course, is Googling (or fine, Microsoft Binging). For real-time searches, there is Twitter. For people or entities, there’s Facebook. But if what you want to find are things, objects, then Pinterest is the way to go. He sat down with the co-founder of Pinterest, Evan Sharp.

Marco Arment on Boycotting Amazon

Insightful reads, delightful tools. Marco Arment on Boycotting Amazon. Tuesday, August 12, 2014. That’s why I use Google search and Maps despite not liking Google much, why I still use Instagram and haven’t deleted my Facebook account despite not liking Facebook, why I still use Twitter heavily despite their many dick moves, and why I even recently bought a Samsung SSD because the alternatives weren’t competitive. Sometimes, there's just no competition. I'll Never Fly Amazon Again. Or save it for later.

Evgeny Morozov on External Memory

http://sssimpli.com/evgeny-morozov-on-external-memory

Insightful reads, delightful tools. Evgeny Morozov on External Memory. Friday, August 15, 2014. For him, the problem of digital forgetting transcends the purely transactional concerns over who has access to what data; even if access to private information is uncompromised, our mental balance could still collapse under the burden of too much data. Today's read was written more than four years ago. It's still remarkably relevant, however. I was reminded of it when I read about Rebecca Woolf on NPR.

An NYT Debate on 3D Printing

http://sssimpli.com/an-nyt-debate-on-3d-printing

Insightful reads, delightful tools. An NYT Debate on 3D Printing. Wednesday, August 13, 2014. For the last half-decade, three-dimensional printing has been billed as the next revolution in manufacturing. The Economist and Wired have declared it world-changing technology. Last year, retailers including Staples and Amazon began to sell their own 3-D printers, and this year, Amazon has introduced a marketplace for 3-D printed objects. So what's all the hoopla? What can 3D printing do, and what can it not?

Caleb Garling on Facebook's Algorithm

Insightful reads, delightful tools. Caleb Garling on Facebook's Algorithm. Monday, August 11, 2014. Later, people asked me, "What do you think elevated the post? To get on my bad side lately, which may be why Caleb Garling's latest experiment resonated with me. Garling set out to "trick" Facebook's algorithm, which surfaces some stories to the top of users' news feeds while suppressing others. It does so by scanning each update for keywords which imply personal milestones. Is it really so cut-and-dry?
