Books, reading and writing. Laquo; short and sweet. April 10, 2010. Revolutionary Road is the name of the street where Frank and April Wheeler live in Richard Yates’ novel of the same name. Of course they do, because Frank and April have a horror of convention – they maintain an ironic detachment from their suburban home as proof of their authenticity and intellectual superiority. This plan energises them for a while but Frank begins to realize that he is never going to write the novel because he’s...

Books, reading and writing. Laquo; dead europe. April 2, 2010. Promises much via subtitle (. How irrational thinking hinders scientific progress, harms the planet and threatens our lives. Cover blurb and hype. Unfortunately, there’s not a lot of ‘how’ in the book and certainly no ‘why’. Specter uses six examples where public debate around science and scientific evidence has become polarised and irrational with (he says) negative consequences. Specter then goes through the MMR vaccine case. Given his emph...

Books, reading and writing. April 2, 2010. Books I’ve read lately but won’t be reviewing in full (no time or no point). 8211; Gustave Flaubert – enjoyed tremendously, amazing how true to life it remains. 8211; Elizabeth Gaskell – patchy and a bit overblown. Boys and Girls Forever. 8211; Alison Lurie – about kids literature, too US-centric to be fully enjoyable. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. Books, reading and writing. Laquo; american wife. February 23, 2010. It’s been over a month since I finished Christos Tsiolkas’. And I’m still unsure what to think of it. I’d say it’s really really good, but I can’t explain why. I’d say it is really visceral and revolting, but I don’t mean that in a bad way. I’d tell you it has vampires in it, but I’d hate you to think it’s. This is one of the most interesting things about this book – it directly challenges clichés that most readers and writers act...

A blog for the things I read, see and hear. Newer posts →. The Most Human Human. The Most Human Human (2012) by Brian Christian looks at how AI can make us reflect on what our human qualities are and how AI relates to them. Christian was one of the human participants in the 2009 Turing Test, where computers attempt to pass as humans as both chat to judges over written messages. The book wouldn’t be a bad essay but the thesis is a bit weak and the meandering a bit wide to make it much good as a book.
