http://yalu7-willteachforfood.blogspot.com/2011/02/dissection-ultimate-hands-on-science.html
A former journalist turned student teacher chronicles her adventures in education. Monday, February 28, 2011. Dissection: the ultimate hands-on science! Today my fourth-grade class took a field trip to the Seattle Science Foundation’s Kids in Medicine program, located on the Swedish Cherry Hill campus. The program recruits current and retired teachers to assist with hands-on science experiences like the one we had today: dissecting pig hearts! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). A former journalist turned student teacher chronicles her adventures in education. Wednesday, November 17, 2010. I loved this week’s math class because I love data—not just mean, median, and mode but also the presentation and evaluation of data. We’re bombarded with it, and it makes sense to help students learn how to understand it. But I think any lesson in using it should be accompanied by a lesson in how to determine the credibility of data, and how to use data responsibly. What does it say? The Brown...

A former journalist turned student teacher chronicles her adventures in education. Wednesday, November 10, 2010. A reflection on reflections. My post from today's math class isn't entirely math-related. To me, the most insightful part of the session stemmed from a question Janet asked: How do we teach these various approaches we're learning about, when so much of our daily work will be tied to specific curriculum and programs? A former journalist turned student teacher chronicles her adventures in education. Monday, February 7, 2011. I started my second week of teaching math, and I felt much more confident this week than last. The main reason, I think, is that I didn’t let myself rely completely on the curriculum script. Today, I felt great, and I even didn’t have to read my own script—because I wrote it and knew it. Maybe it was the content—factors! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Learning Is Messy - Blog. Of operations of positive and negative numbers. I still have to think deliberately about why, when subtracting a larger negative number, we would pair positive and negative numbers to create zero, but I do grasp it. And slope- which we addressed a little bit in this last class- and, dare I say it, geometry. The Pythagorean The...

OK, “comfort” may be too strong a term. “Awareness of” might be a better phrase. A vast sense of comfort would take more than one quarter.). In our last class (and I think in a previous class or two), Robin told (warned? How could this class be improved? And maybe that can’t be taught. Maybe that will only come with experience. WillTeachForFood: Studio Day
http://yalu7-willteachforfood.blogspot.com/2011/01/studio-day.html
A former journalist turned student teacher chronicles her adventures in education. Wednesday, January 26, 2011. The more I think about Studio Day, the more I appreciate it. I had wondered why we couldn't simply perform this assignment in our main placements, but of course a) we're essentially seeing only one grade level there; and b) rarely do we- or at least I- have time devoted solely to one child's thoughts.
