This is shown continually throughout the book, as Eleni is ostracized for not only her parents being Spanish and Greek but also because of her facial hair (she has a ‘moustache’) her name, her clothes and how her physical appearance challenges feminine gender stereotypes. She is too clever and too outspoken.
