adventures in sustainable design: January 2012

Adventures in sustainable design. Sunday, January 29, 2012. Tuesday, January 17, 2012. Vintage Geisha LOVE: Spring Inspirations 3. I don't know exactly what role these images play. In the styling of spring, all I know is that I am drawn to them. The elaborate hair- the kimono shapes. The white face makeup-. I guess it all really began with this image of a Greek protester. From the recent Time magazine honoring "the protester" as the person of the year. Even though she is not a Geisha,. 8213; Frida Kahlo.

Humphrey House - Green Remodeling of an Arts and Crafts Bungalow: These are Some Serious Windows
http://www.humphrey-house.com/2011/05/these-are-some-serious-windows.html
Tuesday, May 17, 2011. These are Some Serious Windows. Working in the field of green homes. Is both a blessing and a bit of a curse. It's great to establish contacts with people that understand healthy indoor air and energy efficiency, but when you live in a 1920's house you realize there are a lot of improvements that can be made. One thing we had done a few years ago when we finished our second floor was install some storm windows on the original windows. Around the seams to ensure a good airtight seal.

Humphrey House - Green Remodeling of an Arts and Crafts Bungalow: February 2011
http://www.humphrey-house.com/2011_02_01_archive.html
Wednesday, February 02, 2011. Photos of Chicago's Blizzard of '11. At Humphrey House, it's been a relatively uneventful winter - until today. At about 2:30 AM yesterday Feb 1, we started getting snow and howling winds (40-50 mph) and it didn't let up until 10:00AM today. When it was all over, it was the third-snowiest. Day on record with 20.2" totals. However, due to the high winds, there is hardly any snow on the roofs of any buildings - it all was blown onto the ground creating massive drifts. During t...

Humphrey House - Green Remodeling of an Arts and Crafts Bungalow: June 2010

Thursday, June 24, 2010. Are Grass Lawns Overrated? We've been experimenting with a new thing at our home this summer - a dead lawn! Just look at the wonderful progress we've made on killing off the grass. But why. Is this the lazyman's approach to "lawn care"? The latest form of a "no-mow" lawn? No, we are in fact prepping the front yard for a sustainable revival of sorts. Traditional lawn turfgrass has very shallow root systems (ever see sod? In addition to returning some of this land to its natural su...

Humphrey House - Green Remodeling of an Arts and Crafts Bungalow: Finally Redecorating the Living Room
http://www.humphrey-house.com/2011/05/finally-redecorating-living-room.html
Thursday, May 19, 2011. Finally Redecorating the Living Room. In our remodeling journey, the overall motivation here is to refinish the floors before baby comes and soon begins crawling on them, but first, we have to fix the walls and ceiling and paint them. You see, the living room has been left mostly how we found it upon taking ownership of Humphrey House. There have been a few small changes. But nothing major. There were however several things needed:. We had long ago removed an air duct. Line which ...

Humphrey House - Green Remodeling of an Arts and Crafts Bungalow: Beam says Thankya Big Big!
http://www.humphrey-house.com/2005/01/beam-says-thankya-big-big.html
Sunday, January 09, 2005. Beam says Thankya Big Big! Took it a little easier today. We still have the remnants of a 10 inch snowfall in Chicago, and as I crushed through slush on the way over, I came up with a plan to tame the possibility of making the dirt airborne again. Snow! So I filled up about 10 buckets worth of the white stuff and pushed it around in the basement. Slow once the slush melted on top of it. Looks like we might have to get John to rod it out someday. We didn't want to bring the beam ...

Humphrey House - Green Remodeling of an Arts and Crafts Bungalow: Living Room Renaissance
http://www.humphrey-house.com/2006/07/living-room-renaissance.html
Wednesday, July 12, 2006. Last weekend, Jen's dad came up to lend a hand with a variety of tasks. While our contractors worked on completing the subflooring upstairs, Kenny and Jay worked on tracing the path of the living room light fixture. Backstory: After moving in, we noticed an unused electrical box with a cover on it in the center of the ceiling. Not too surprising, right? Well, the surprise was that there was no switch. To be found on any. However, it turned out that our detective work was not qui...

Humphrey House - Green Remodeling of an Arts and Crafts Bungalow: Finished Floors!
http://www.humphrey-house.com/2011/06/finished-floors.html
Tuesday, June 14, 2011. This blog post is a bit delayed, but we finally have some new floors to rave about! Years after moving - far more than expected - we finally ditched the old teal green carpeting. And now have some wonderful stained floors in the home. With the help of our friends at Green Home Experts. We went with Rubio's color "Black." I know what you're thinking, "Who wants black floors? To see what I'm talking about. The oil was applied by hand along the room edge and then with a floor buffer ...
