Recipes for Millie

Because when you're older, you might want to learn to cook. Here's Millie's 5th birthday cake. As ever, it was Nigella's buttermilk birthday cake recipe - the perfect construction cake. I used a massive round cake tin (I think it's 30cm across), and a smaller, 7inch sandwich tin. 150g yoghurt mixed with 250ml milk (or 400ml buttermilk). 3 teaspoons vanilla extract. 3 teaspoons baking powder. 1 teaspoon bicarb of soda. Next, assemble your cat. You'll need:. A little icing sugar, for rolling out the icing.

Recipes for Millie: June 2010

http://recipesformillie.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html

Because when you're older, you might want to learn to cook. I was going to take a photo of these, but you and your Dad ate them so fast that there were none left. I think they've joined his list of favourite biscuits (although Anzac biscuits may still be top of the heap). 50g light muscovado sugar. 100g glace cherries, chopped. Stick the oven on at about 180 degrees C. You'll need a baking tray, and a silicon sheet or some greaseproof paper - these will stick horribly otherwise. Links to this post. Makes...

Because when you're older, you might want to learn to cook. We had some of these in the veg box last week, and they've been lurking in the fridge ever since. Stuck for what to do, I turned to the trusty Nigel Slater, and his book about vegetables, Tender. You'll need 3-4 Jerusalem artichokes per person, if you're having them as a side dish. Beware their side-effects. Stick your oven on at about 180 degrees C or hotter (often it depends what else you're cooking in there). Links to this post. Sling the but...

Recipes for Millie: December 2009

http://recipesformillie.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html

Because when you're older, you might want to learn to cook. We made this for a party, where it disappeared rather rapidly. It made a nice change from making bread in the bread machine. It's an American recipe, so everything's in cups. 1 packet (7g ish) of dried yeast. 4 1/2 cups strong white bread flour. 1 cup warm water. 1 cup warm milk. 1/4 cup olive oil. Leave in a warm place for another hour or so. I stuck the oven on to warm up at this point - you'll need it at about 200 degrees C. Once it's risen a...

Recipes for Millie: Spinach and feta muffins

http://recipesformillie.blogspot.com/2010/06/spinach-and-feta-muffins.html

Because when you're older, you might want to learn to cook. Spinach and feta muffins. I adapted a Hugh Fearnley-Whernley recipe for these - and it turned out a treat. Makes 12 enormous muffins, or lots and lots of fairy-cake sized ones. You'll need:. 1 small onion, finely chopped. Whatever spinach you have lurking at the bottom of the fridge, chopped. A little olive oil. Half a pack or so of feta, cubed. 2 teaspoons baking powder. 1/2 teaspoon bicarb of soda. 80g butter, melted and cooled down a bit.

view from nappy mountain: Holidays!

http://nappymountain.blogspot.com/2012/07/holidays.html

View from nappy mountain. All you need is cake. It's holiday time, yay! I have a month off, which is fabulous. There's so much we want to fit in, it will be a miracle if we manage everything. On Saturday we spent the whole day there, eating takeaway pizza for lunch, and launching The Enormous Walrus, M's new boat. She took to rowing pretty quickly (luckily we have a rope attached, so she can't zoom off across the lake.). Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. I like this lot. The m...

View from nappy mountain. All you need is cake. Sundays are quite busy in our house. Yesterday, we skated at the ice hall, ate buns at the ABC caf, then headed off into the wilds of Noljakka for some skiing and potkukelkka-ing. When we got to the end, the brown ninja decided to throw herself down the massive mound of snow you can see here. She knows no fear at the moment. Links to this post. View from nappy mountain. All you need is cake. It's been a busy week. We went skiing at Lykynlampi on Sunday in the sunshine. M's skating school had their end of term performance on Monday (the tinies were hilarious). The bigger ones, especially the formation skaters, were just amazing. Here's M's class in the middle of their routine. On Wednesday, I made Easter decorations with the Martat ladies. We covered eggs in paper and fabric, and us (and some of the table in my case) in glue. Links to this post.

View from nappy mountain. All you need is cake. Yes, that'll be the 16cm of snow which landed in my back garden last night then. Apparently Finnish school is brilliant because you can go and play king of the castle on the enormous snow heaps thrown up by the snowplough, and the school actually has a box of sledges you can get out at playtime. There may also have been meatballs today, which just added to the excitement. Links to this post. A weekend in Finland. Friday: Rustle makes some new friends:.

View from nappy mountain. All you need is cake. Here's M (at 1:13-1:15) helping 6,000 other elementary schoolkids in Joensuu celebrate the beginning of summer on the 1st of June. They sang some lovely Finnish songs (including our favourite, Terve, to the tune of YMCA.), backed by a military band. The sun shone, and everyone clapped along. Fab. View from nappy mountain. All you need is cake. June, part 2. The rest of June disappeared into a fog of work, but we did find time for a few other things:. There was much high speed barging of rally cars (and lots of bits falling off, including rather worryingly a wheel at one point, which careered down the track, bounced through and over a crowd of spectators, and landed on some poor person's car in the car park. View from nappy mountain. All you need is cake. A Finnish mother's day. It started with breakfast in bed (yoghurt, banana and toasted bagels), and was followed by an expedition to Outokumpo to the nature park:. We had a picnic in the sunshine (soup and karjalan piirakka). It was a bit chilly, which is why we still have our winter hats on. And at the top:. After that, we headed home in the sunshine for a barbecue in our garden. A perfect day. Links to this post. Once you get to the edge of the nature rese...

So far this month, we have:. 2 Created a mökki for Captain Jack (as you can see, he's got a rather nifty sleeping bunk, a sofa (with stripy cover), a chair, and a boat (doubling here as a table, with his saucepan and plate on top). He also has a fishing rod. Maybe a grilli next? 3 We've also gone swimming (in the pool - the lake is too chilly yet to do more than paddle! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). May 5, 2010. Baked Brie with Cranberry Sauce. 8212; thr0ust @ 3:11 am. For this version of the cranberry sauce I doubled the sugar to ensure that it was nice and sweet as well as tart to complement the savoury melted cheese. My baked brie did not turn out quite as I had hoped as the puff pastry did not hold together and it opened up while cooking. Despite the fact that it does not look the best, it sure was good! 1 sheet puff pastry (thawed). 1 cup cranberry sauce. 1 round of brie. 8212; thr0ust @ 2:34 am.
