The Recovering Journalist

Wednesday, December 26, 2012. Les Mis: From stage to screen. As a huge fan of the stage production of Les Miserables, I’ve been asked by many people for my thoughts on the new movie. I’ve seen the Broadway show at least a dozen times and my husband has probably seen it twice as many times, so we’re quite particular and notice every little detail. Naturally I had to see Les Miserables as soon as it opened, and I’m relieved to be able to say that I’m generally pleased with the adaptation. A few of the song...

The Recovering Journalist: Catch me if you can (and trust me, you can)

http://www.recoveringjournalist.blogspot.com/2009/03/catch-me-if-you-can-and-trust-me-you.html

Wednesday, March 11, 2009. Catch me if you can (and trust me, you can). I've been doing something lately that I never thought I would do. I've been running. And when I say running, I mean without being chased. Since the beginning of February I've been doing a program called Couch to 5K. As the name implies, it's designed to get you off the couch and ready to run a 5K. I just completely four weeks of the nine-week program and I'm hoping to run the Bloomin' 5k. Unfortunately I haven't seen the same progres...

The Recovering Journalist: Live music, take note

http://www.recoveringjournalist.blogspot.com/2009/08/live-music-take-note.html

Monday, August 17, 2009. Live music, take note. One of the best parts of summer are all of the concerts and we've been to some great ones this year. But even my recent outing to the amazing Paul McCartney show reminded me those who put on concerts still have a lot to learn from their counterparts in the theater world. I don't pretend to believe that all theater-goers are models of perfect decorum. I can't count the number of performances I've sat through where despite strict instructions to turn off ...

Monday, December 20, 2010. The best books of 2010. I've done a lot more reading than writing this year, so here's a sampling of what kept me busy in 2010. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Not in My Neighborhood: How Bigotry Shaped a Great American City. The Lost Dogs: Michael Vick's Dogs and Their Tale of Rescue and Redemption. The Art of Racing in the Rain. The Great Typo Hunt: Two Friends Changing the World, One Correction at a Time. By Jeff Deck and Benjamin D. Herson. View my complete profile.

The Recovering Journalist: Welcoming the new

http://www.recoveringjournalist.blogspot.com/2009/01/welcoming-new.html

Thursday, January 01, 2009. She may have been three weeks earlier than expected but I'm quite excited to welcome a new little friend into the world. Riley Rose was born on Monday to our good friends, Kristen and Nathan and we had the pleasure of meeting her, with her full head of Nathan-like hair, the very next day. After meeting Riley and seeing what a good baby she is, I'm starting to get excited about all of the things we'll be able to teach her. And we can use her as an excuse too. Instead of...The D...

The Recovering Journalist: December 2008

http://www.recoveringjournalist.blogspot.com/2008_12_01_archive.html

Saturday, December 20, 2008. The end of an era. My grandmother passed away a week ago today. Her death is the first loss I've suffered as an adult and I'm still trying to cope with it. The funeral was Monday and at my grandfather's request, I gave one of the eulogies. I was glad to be able to talk about a few of the things that made my grandmother so special. Grandma wanted to make sure we all got a good education so she could brag about how smart we were. She wanted to make sure we all had our own h...

Recovering Jack

In April 2002, our most favorite boy was born. Slowly he began to slip away.and autism took over. Now we are reclaiming him. Here's how.thanks for reading. Lovin' our Big Boy! Tuesday, May 03, 2011. Today I heard that Jack's friend, Hayden, had not listened to his Mom when she asked him to turn off his Wii. Her response was to remove the Wii game and break it in half. Wow! After sharing the story, Jack said (unprompted about learning a lesson) "Hey! I learned something from that story about Hayden! Today...

April 6, 2014. For my first post I just want to elaborate upon how I became enlightened to my unhealthy habits and how little by little I am changing those habits! I always knew that my habits were unhealthy and that my family should eat better, but I always told myself that I was just too busy to eat better or that it was too expensive to eat any other way…not true on both accounts! Don’t we all! The Twenty Ten Theme. Blog at WordPress.com. Blog at WordPress.com. The Twenty Ten Theme. Add your thoughts ...

9 years sober Mama writes about her quest for healing from alcoholism and loss. Monday, June 2, 2014. Links to this post. Monday, February 17, 2014. It came to me right when I was tucking them in tonight- the idea: it is not about keeping them from getting hurt. It is not about keeping them safe. I thought it was but I was wrong. 40 years later, with my own children past toddlerhood I think about that story. I think about fear and my new understanding of just what shapes fear and the impact that it c...
