Redfoot Tortoise egg laying and development

http://www.redfoottortoise.com/redfoot_eggs.htm

Living in the shade. Click to join Redfoot Tortoise. Egg Laying and Development. Redfoot tortoises will lay eggs year round. However they seem to lay the most in the fall and early winter. They prefer very moist to rather wet locations. Mine frequently lay the eggs in muddy areas. Surprisingly the nest are usually rather shallow. Often the eggs are barely covered. These eggs were laid in mud. I like to have an incubator set up prior to egg laying. I use the Hovabator. At 5-8 days (depending on the temper...

Redfoot tortoise in the shade...do they get UVB?

http://www.redfoottortoise.com/Redfoots_in_the_shade.htm

Living in the shade. Click to join Redfoot Tortoise. Redfoot tortoises in the shade, do they need UVB? A common question from new Redfoot tortoises is. Why do I need a UVB light. Dont Redfoot tortoises live in the shade. Aside from the fact that they arent strict deep forest dwellers, the following shows that they do get UVB even in deep shade. Here in South Carolina I have confirmed this using a Solarmeter 6.2 UVB radiometer. DIFFUSE COMPONENT OF THE SOLAR ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION IN TREE SHADE. In tree sh...

Toxic Plants and Flowers

Living in the shade. Click to join Redfoot Tortoise. Toxic Plants and Flowers. This is not a complete list. Just because a flower isnt listed here doesnt mean that torts can eat it. For tortoise safe plants and flowers visit Edible Plants. Aconite ( monkhood, wolfsbane). Azalea spp. (Rhododendron spp.). Burning bush (strawberry bush, spindle tree, wahoo). Calla palustris (Zantedeschia aethiopica). Carolina jasmine (yellow jessamine). Death cammas (black snakeroot). Golden chain tree (laburnum).

Hatchling and Juvenile Care

http://www.redfoottortoise.com/redfoot_tortoise_hatchling_care.htm

Living in the shade. Click to join Redfoot Tortoise. Hatchling and Juvenile Care. I have found that a bus boy bin is the ideal first home. If you cant find one of those, use a cement mixing tray (found at Home Depot and Lowes). The inside diameter is 19 long. 15 wide and 7 deep. The size is ideal for good air circulation and the color (opaque grey) seems to give the redfoot hatchlings a sense of security. Once they are bigger, Rubbermaid storage bins work well. http://ameliagrace1997.blogspot.com/2009/10/breakfast-in-afternoon.html

A Day in the Life of Our Red Foot Tortoises. Thursday, October 1, 2009. Breakfast in the afternoon! I had some hungry hungry hippos this afternoon. I have started feeding them around 11:00am because it is too chilly in the mornings. All three of them have been more active lately so we have enjoyed watching them explore their habitat. Rosie was very persistant with this mushroom and she was able to eat it all! Ginger is diving right in. Cecil is trying to decide what he wants first! Posted by Brandy Frain.

Every species of chelonian (turtle and tortoise) has its own special habitat, climate, and dietary requirements. These requirements are interlinked and affect an animal’s health, appetite, quality of life, and longevity. There is no beginner or easy species, just the ones you know a lot about and can keep healthy and happy,. And the ones you have yet to become expert in keeping. A chelonian's size is NOT limited by the size of its enclosure. As the animal grows, the space may become too small. Sources of...
