Redgannet's Dragonflies: January 2010
http://redgannetsdragonflies.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html
Featuring personal posts and contributions from from around the world. Thursday, 28 January 2010. Cape Town, South Africa. In Cape Town this week I have visited some likely looking sites checking for Dragonflies. I started at the hotel at which we were staying, The Lord Charles at Somerset West. There is a small dam in the grounds which has plenty of lily pads and emergent growth around the edges. First were some Common Bluetails,. This one was infested with mites. The individual above was especially dark.

Featuring personal posts and contributions from from around the world. Sunday, 6 December 2009. In Feb 1942, Singapore fell to the Japanese. If the Allied forces had not eventually turned the tables, I would be falling on my sword about now. This is the rewritten post, replacing the mistake riddled previous effort. My thanks go to Mr Ian Rocoto from http:/ odonata-malaysia.blogspot.com/. For his guiding hand and experienced eye. For the common name for. Just inside the gate on Napier Road is the Marsh Ga...

Redgannet's Dragonflies: February 2010
http://redgannetsdragonflies.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html
Featuring personal posts and contributions from from around the world. Tuesday, 23 February 2010. The SSR (Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam) Botanic Gardens at Pamplemousses, have some reasonable habitat to accommodate some of the common odonata species of Mauritius. The first water I came to was the Victoria lily pond. Dragonflies seemed to like the raised edges of the lilies and 4 species were quickly found here. I found a likely suspect in Black Percher. Does occur in Mauritius and I could find no other suit...

Redgannet's Dragonflies: November 2009
http://redgannetsdragonflies.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html
Featuring personal posts and contributions from from around the world. Tuesday, 3 November 2009. Dade County, Miami, Fla. Temperatures reached an unseasonal 85 today during a trip to Miami. Calm air and easy access to Snapper Creek made choice of activities a formality. As I approached the river, I noticed a Great Egret and 2 White Ibis close to the water's edge. A pair of large iguanas were moving towards the sunlit grass. It was a Scarlet Skimmer, Crocothemis servilia. This dragonfly has appeared i...

Featuring personal posts and contributions from from around the world. Tuesday, 19 January 2010. I have been languishing in temperate climes for the last month and narry a dragonfly seen. Accra in Ghana however, is basking in 35C heat and the odonata are active through January. There is a post on http:/ www.redgannet.blogspot.com/. For the bird fanciers and for those who prefer a more detailed commentary. The pterostigma seem a little elongated and I can see no sign of a yellow base to the hindwing for a...

Featuring personal posts and contributions from from around the world. Friday, 16 October 2009. Sultanpur, New Delhi, India. The logistics of getting to and a description of Sultanpur Lake are given in the respective post on http:/ www.redgannet.blogspot.com/. I have brought a new camera with me today. The Canon 50D arrived just an hour before I left for the airport, giving me just enough time to get some steam into the battery. They both exhibit similar blotches at the bases of the wings. In terms of qu...

Redgannet's Dragonflies: August 2009
http://redgannetsdragonflies.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html
Featuring personal posts and contributions from from around the world. Monday, 31 August 2009. On a trip to Miami this week, I was tempted by a new camera and succumbed. I had been looking for a little while at the Nikon Coolpix P90, hoping that it would save me a lot of carrying and lens changing. Could it perform well enough to replace the SLR and all it’s lenses? The wide angle and mid range zoom are fine. I have no problems there. To my mind, I think it is an oversight not to provide a remote release...
