Arial is not Helvetica - RedGrittyBrick

http://www.redgrittybrick.org/fonts.html

Arial is not Helvetica. How and why was Arial made? In the early days of computer-based typography, there were a core set of typefaces that were established as almost essential for desktop publishing. These included Helvetica, Courier and Times. What are the differences? There are some noticable differences between the original typefaces and the typefaces Microsoft introduced to imitate them. Arial is not Helvetica. Courier New is not Courier. Times New Roman is not Times. Jens Kutilek Small typology pag...

Image File Formats - RedGrittyBrick

http://www.redgrittybrick.org/images.html

Some people say that JPEG is always better than GIF. To me, with these images, GIF gives as good quality as JPEG. Even for photos! For plain text or flat-colour drawings, GIF gives a better quality result. GIF is nearly always smaller than uncompressed JPEG. Compressed JPG wins on size (not quality) for these photographic images. Don’t use JPEG for text! Use JPEG for photos. Oldest. Only 256 colours. Transparency. Animation. Patent issues. Lossy No transparency. No animation. Designed for photos. They al...

Adobe Postscript - the printer language - RedGrittyBrick

http://www.redgrittybrick.org/postscript.html

Adobe Postscript - the printer language. Postscript was first popularised as a format for sending print-data to high end laser printers. It has long been a standard for professional printing. Nowadays, it is supported by many inexpensive personal laser printers such as the HP LaserJet 1200/1300 upward. Postscript is also a fully functional programming language. Which means you can send your printer a few lines of text that cause it to internally. Calculate pi to a thousand places. The result is that the ...

Batteries - How long do they last? - RedGrittyBrick

http://www.redgrittybrick.org/batteries.html

Batteries - How long do they last? I’ve been trying to find the best batteries for a small handheld GPS that I use. This is a Garmin Geko 201, which I chose for its miniscule size and weight. So instead of using the GPS to measure battery performance I decided to use a torch (flashlight in USian). The nearest one to hand was a Peli Versabrite. (6000 CP, 5 Lumens, 2xAA, 0.6A, 1.8W). I used AAA batteries instead of AA since the GPS takes AAA batteries. 2 x AAA in Peli Versabrite. Here’s the results.

Java - RedGrittyBrick

http://www.redgrittybrick.org/java.html

This is from a conversation in newsgroup comp. lang. java. gui in January 2007. A participant was asking how to run one Java program from another. I wanted to illustrate how to put together a GUI app in Java where new windows would be opened as a result of pressing a button without the need to use Runtime.exec() to start a completely new program. For brevity I’ve omitted MemberPanel (singular). I would add ActionListener and add/edit/delete buttons to MemberListPanel, MemberListPanel could have...A Java ...
