The Vieux Chateau du Cros. Reading, writing, living in France. Asymp; 3 Comments. Theo, one of my oldest – in the sense that I’ve known her for ever – friends is having a big birthday today. As well as getting her an embarrassingly small birthday present because it was easy to post in Bordeaux I got to thinking how very lucky I am in that I still have two very good friends whom I have known from my earliest childhood. Of course if it hadn’t been for our parents knowing each other and thinking that ...

BOOK DOG | THOMAS QUINN: A26 | Roadkill | Pascal Garnier
http://thomasquinn.blogspot.com/2013/01/a26-roadkill-pascal-garnier.html
BOOK DOG THOMAS QUINN. One page at a time. Tuesday, 22 January 2013. A26 Roadkill Pascal Garnier. Pascal Garnier’s The A26. this is literary fiction with a hapless, desperate serial killer. At first Garnier seems intent on playing this for laughs as if the victims are utterly meaningless and that jars a bit. But as the book went on it began to really grip me. The truth that is revealed is that for these Frenchmen and women the war has never really ended, and they are the poorer for it. Stuck In A Book.

BOOK DOG | THOMAS QUINN: Has the Black Swan Stolen an Oscar?
http://thomasquinn.blogspot.com/2011/04/has-black-swan-stolen-oscar.html
BOOK DOG THOMAS QUINN. One page at a time. Friday, 1 April 2011. Has the Black Swan Stolen an Oscar? Will Natalie Portman one day come to regret ever taking the lead role in Black Swan. This Guardian blog sums up the case neatly enough. If that is the case, shouldn't the dancing have come across a little better? The dancing, at least the effort she put into it, regardless of the fact that it still looked less than you would see in a proper ballet, lifted the performance up two, three, ten levels. If ther...

BOOK DOG | THOMAS QUINN: Pow! First impressions of a controversial Chinese literary POWerhouse

BOOK DOG THOMAS QUINN. One page at a time. Tuesday, 22 January 2013. First impressions of a controversial Chinese literary POWerhouse. Thinking about it, 2013 has to be the ideal time to focus on the big wide world. The last twelve months have, after all, been so bloody British: Jubilee, Olympics, about a dozen pageants, Dickens, Shakespeare, even Scottish independence. There were entire weeks when you wondered if the rest of the globe had shut down completely. I’m no Mo Yan expert (who is? I found it di...

BOOK DOG THOMAS QUINN. One page at a time. Tuesday, 22 January 2013. An Elk is for life, not just for Christmas. Doppler. The cover of Doppler. By Erlend Loe comes with a neat little tagline: “An elk is for life. not just for Christmas.”. Doppler is middle aged, his father has just died, and he’s fallen off his bike. So he leaves his comfortable Oslo home, takes a tent and heads off to live in the woods, “adopts” an elk calf and calls him Bongo. The Steven Van Zandt comedy BBC4 ran recently – perha...

BOOK DOG THOMAS QUINN. One page at a time. Friday, 23 November 2012. CJ Sansom Dominion Nazis in Great Britain. He is best known for his historical detective series starring the Tudor hunchback, Shardlake – think Wolf Hall crossed with Inspector Morse. But with Dominion, CJ Sansom takes history by the neck and sends it flying. “What if,” he’s asking, “Germany hadn’t lost the war? We’ve been here before. The author has already highlighted two influences in Len Deighton’s SS-GB. As a Scot, Sansom saves som...
