The Retrospective Traveler

A retrospective on various travels and adventures. Monday, August 06, 2007. Betting everything on black. In almost everything I do in my life, I take the outcome, analyze it and apply it to other areas of my life. I’ve always had an instinctive introspection for as long as I can remember in a semi-successful attempt to stop learning “things the hard way.” Either way, I always have something new to think about. I’m on a roll! This can never end! I better stop before my luck runs out. So, once again the de...

The Retrospective Traveler: Georges and the Hospitable New Yorkers

http://www.retrotraveler.blogspot.com/2006/03/georges-and-hospitable-new-yorkers.html

A retrospective on various travels and adventures. Friday, March 17, 2006. Georges and the Hospitable New Yorkers. The year was 1998 and the time was 4:03PM on a balmy Wednesday afternoon in Tampa, Florida. The office know-it-all, Lanny, sidled in over the Vice President of Operations and quizzed us all on what a hurricane was. “Do any of you…. know… what a hurrrrry-cane is? 8220;Well, anyone? 8221; Lanny insisted. 8221; she asked. 8220;Not sure. I think I’ll stay here or drive to Alabama or so...8220;Yo...

The Retrospective Traveler: Vegas, baby, Vegas!

http://www.retrotraveler.blogspot.com/2006/02/vegas-baby-vegas.html

A retrospective on various travels and adventures. Wednesday, February 15, 2006. Vegas, baby, Vegas! Off one of the two main freeways that lead East, the Interstate 10, there’s a pretty odd but nonetheless cool town called Cabazon. It’s home to the same giant dinosaurs that were in Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure. It’s a nice stop to get some food, look at the dinosaurs and stretch your legs if you’re on a road trip to Havasu (aka The River) or Phoenix. Into ghost towns or a sucker for novelty like I am.

The Retrospective Traveler: The Whiskey Rebellion

http://www.retrotraveler.blogspot.com/2006/05/whiskey-rebellion.html

A retrospective on various travels and adventures. Sunday, May 14, 2006. Pretty soon, the whiskey was opened up and the bottle was handed straight to me. Everyone seemed hesitant to take a drink. I wanted so bad to stay the hero for the night that I grabbed the bottle, held my breath and took the biggest swig of whiskey I possibly could, swallowed it down and let out a bellowing laugh and shouted, "Damn that's some fine drink! You’ll have to keep reading to find out about that one. Sunday, May 14, 2006.

The Retrospective Traveler: Goodbye, red double-deckers

http://www.retrotraveler.blogspot.com/2005/12/goodbye-red-double-deckers.html

A retrospective on various travels and adventures. Tuesday, December 13, 2005. Goodbye, red double-deckers. 8221; Instead, Londoners I found Londoners to be normal people, just riding the subway in an orderly fashion. Replacement bus. That would happen in America, undoubtedly, along with the stream of lawsuits suing over the mental trauma of having a bus door open on up on the freeway. Not in El Salvador. News stories and blogs are filled with people over the last few days lamenting the loss of the doubl...

The Retrospective Traveler: The Hottest Place I’ve Ever Been, Part I

http://www.retrotraveler.blogspot.com/2006/04/hottest-place-ive-ever-been-part-i.html

A retrospective on various travels and adventures. Sunday, April 16, 2006. The Hottest Place I’ve Ever Been, Part I. I’ve been to some pretty hot places. Note to Miller Brewing Company: there’s an idea for your “Real American Hero” ad campaign. We salute you, Glory Hole Drillers.). Chupa mi verga, pinche cabron. But that’s about it. What made this particular outhouse so terrible was that a shit soiled copy of the Spanish language newspaper. Always seemed to wait for me on the floor when I pulled my pants...

Lost In Limoges: October 2006

http://lostinlimoges.blogspot.com/2006_10_01_archive.html

Monday, October 30, 2006. Autumn in France means one thing: champignons. City-dwellers take to the hills in search of the most elusive of delicate, tasty mushrooms. (Lessons from my French class back this up. The photocopied documents illustrate "a day in France: September 15" with an image of a family scrambling around on hands and knees, digging through the forest, to fill a basket with mushrooms.) At the Saturday morning market, the lines at the mushroom man's display have been phenomenal. I think the...

Lost In Limoges: August 2006

http://lostinlimoges.blogspot.com/2006_08_01_archive.html

Tuesday, August 08, 2006. Wild Blueberry Picking in the Mountains of the Limousin. On our Saturday visit to the distillery, the brewmaster mentioned that she was expecting a batch of blueberries from a local grower, as it's now the season for the fruit. Our ears perked up. Blueberry season? Back at the house, I leafed through our hiking book and found a drawing of " la myrtille sauvage. Which grow at an altitude of 800 meters on the northern exposure of Les Monedieres. The hike- Le Cirque de Freysselines.

Lost In Limoges: November 2006

http://lostinlimoges.blogspot.com/2006_11_01_archive.html

Thursday, November 09, 2006. Apparently Limoges used to be the Halloween capital of France. Not so this year, when the streets were silent and still. I had even made a special trip to Champion to buy bonbons. For the occasion, but nary a knock on the door. So Pierre and I ate Snickers with our aperitif, while carving a baby pumpkin. The garden produced a few massive pumpkins this Fall, but Pierre was stingy (great soup material! The grey, Fall streets come alive with color during All Saints Day. Beau...

Lost In Limoges: April 2006

http://lostinlimoges.blogspot.com/2006_04_01_archive.html

Tuesday, April 25, 2006. Lamb, It's What's For Dinner. In France. These are the babies at Damien's farm (that's Pierre's cousin)- before the slaughter. Witnessing that is enough to turn you veg. Trust me. Posted by MWN @ 10:47 PM. I have a crush. France's incredible soccer player, Zidane, who is entirely swoon-worthy and heart-stoppingly goodlooking- announced his retirement today. Why? Are you going to do in your retirement, Zidane the Man? Posted by MWN @ 8:04 PM. Monday, April 24, 2006. Business.)...

Lost In Limoges: June 2006

http://lostinlimoges.blogspot.com/2006_06_01_archive.html

Wednesday, June 28, 2006. By far the oddest French custom for me to learn is the kissing ritual. I don't mean the deeply passionate kiss depicted by Rodin in the photo. I mean the cheek to cheek (to cheek to cheek) greeting, and all of its pomp and circumstance. A serious faux pas. Could result, where heads were awkwardly bobbing, cheeks thrust forward expectantly, or the worst yet: a foot lunging forward and a stumble. Before we kiss), 4 for Michelle, Jacques, Manu, Paul and Marie. Tuesday, June 27, 2006.

Poetry and Art

An avenue for sharing some of my poems and photos. Friday, 27 July 2012. Road trip in Wales. A place to rest its head. Now I am breathless. My heart is sold. To the rolling hills of Wales. Composed on 19th June 2012, whilst being driven back to our holiday accommodation in Wales with the sun setting behind us and listening to Amy Winehouse. Back to Poetry and Art. Ah life has finally calmed down, well just a little. Having achieved some awesome long term goals. Back to composing poetry again. From Salzbu...

Continue Reading. XXXI Von Kürbis, Plastik und den Wolken.
