The humidity did not come in on little cat feet, but stampeded through on the enormous legs of an ancient fabled giant. I lay in bed, trapped under the oppressive heat of his breath. Evenings were his. Watch, and he held me captive and restless until September, when slightly cooler temperatures broke his spirit and sent him lurching with an unsteady gait out of my room. Last night I told her that I didn't have room for a piano in my new apartment, and she insisted I find friends with keyboards or pianos so I could go to my peaceful place when I needed that escape. "Don't give up the piano," she said, "you can't let that go." Then she said, "You and I have become friends, you know. And I'm going to miss you.". Thank you, Mrs. Sparrow. You are more valuable than you know.

The World Spins Madly On. Wednesday, January 16, 2013. It's Not About the Bike. We are the same age, born just a few months apart, and I've always used you as my barometer for what I could. The part that is completely mind boggling to me is why. WHY? Why was winning so important that it was at any cost? Why did you risk your own reputation when you were already heroic in millions of eyes and hearts all over the world? I'm in the camp that believes people deserve a second chance, that people can.

The World Spins Madly On. Thursday, February 7, 2013. The Bitter and the Sweet. Originally written on 2/1/13). Throughout the day today I see-sawed between thoughts of Karen and Ed, grief and celebration and sorrow and joy, felt so intensely and simultaneously that I was exhausted by mid-afternoon. Later this evening I began to really process the story of these two people, such different lives and yet both so precious. And they have both taught me things I hope I never lose sight of or forget.
