Riding With MoC

On the Road With MoChassid As He Trains For His Bike Tour Of Israel. Tuesday, November 13, 2007. Everyone Knows It's Windy. Today was the best, strongest day of riding I've ever had. As a result, I am almost too tired to write this. We then took a short break. The ride organizers made a significant change in policy that made a huge difference. They picked up the straglers in a SAG van (in this case a bus) at a predetermined time so that the other riders would not have to wait so long. This ch...After the...

Riding With MoC: June 2005

http://ridingwithmoc.blogspot.com/2005_06_01_archive.html

On the Road With MoChassid As He Trains For His Bike Tour Of Israel. Sunday, June 26, 2005. One of the unpleasant realities of long-distance road cycling is the existence of road kill. The longer you ride, particularly in rural neighborhoods (but not only), the more dead animals you pass. For example, if you do a century (100 mile ride) in Westchester or Connecticut, you will almost assuredly pass at least a dozen, if not twenty, dead creatures. With four months to go until the Alyn Ride.

Riding With MoC: July 2005

http://ridingwithmoc.blogspot.com/2005_07_01_archive.html

On the Road With MoChassid As He Trains For His Bike Tour Of Israel. Friday, July 29, 2005. Hit By A Car. I had a very harrowing bike experience this morning and feel extremely fortunate, BH, to even be able to write this. I went to the 'vasikin' minyan this morning and was on my bike by 6:20. Destination: Point Lookout and back, about 29 flat miles. Since last Sunday was a fast day and I couldn't ride last Friday morning, it had been almost two weeks since I had been on my bike. Tuesday, July 12, 2005.

Riding With MoC: May 2005

http://ridingwithmoc.blogspot.com/2005_05_01_archive.html

On the Road With MoChassid As He Trains For His Bike Tour Of Israel. Wednesday, May 11, 2005. My psycho sister and I went out to Central Park last Sunday morning. We did a few 'hill repeats' in the northern section of the park and then did three laps (a total of 21 miles). Again, there was a major race going on, this time a half marathon, which slowed us down somewhat. Nevertheless, because we started so early, it was manageable. Instead, my sister and I are going to do 45 miles in an organized ride next...

Riding With MoC: September 2004

http://ridingwithmoc.blogspot.com/2004_09_01_archive.html

On the Road With MoChassid As He Trains For His Bike Tour Of Israel. Wednesday, September 29, 2004. I have lost ten pounds since I started training for the Alyn Hospital Ride. I've lost five pounds just in the last five weeks. Not that I'm trying. The pounds are just coming off. In an average hour of training I burn about 765 calories. In a century ride, I burn about 6,000 calories. You can eat 25 four-ounce orders of french fries and still not consume 6,000 calories. Sunday, September 19, 2004. The inju...

Riding With MoC: The Alyn Ride: Day One, The Year of the Flat

http://ridingwithmoc.blogspot.com/2007/11/alyn-ride-day-one-year-of-flat.html

On the Road With MoChassid As He Trains For His Bike Tour Of Israel. Wednesday, November 07, 2007. The Alyn Ride: Day One, The Year of the Flat. But I'm getting ahead of myself. After a delightful Shabbos spent with OOS, OYS, OHDIL our two grandchildren, we bussed out to Tiveria on Motsai Shabbos arriving at our hotel around 10:30. After preparing my stuff for the next day, I turned in at midnight. For reasons I can't explain, I had a miserable night's sleep. At the six mile mark I heard a noise that I r...

The rambling thoughts of a Modern Orthodox Chassid (whatever that means). Contact me at emansouth @ aol.com. Wednesday, October 20, 2004. This morning I was finishing davening at the Kotel when this 20-something-Breslovish-post-Carlebachian-refugefromthesixties-ish guy with long red payis passed by. He was about to start davening and was singing the Disney tune, "It's a Small World", but he substituted the word 'strange' for 'small'. It's a strange world after all, it's a strange world after all.". The h...

The current issue of the OU's Jewish Action (not yet online) has two articles about the apparent difficulties being encountered by children of ba'alei teshuva. While I may write about the substance of the articles at another time (after they are posted on line), I was struck by a consistent thread in the two articles. There may be thousands o...

Riding with J-No

A pointless narrative of a wannabe endurance bicycle rider. Monday, October 8, 2012. My Pugsley has seen some neglect this year. It has been sitting idle since the Almanzo. I borrowed some parts from it creating A-No's build. Last week I took some time and put it back together. Saturday I rode the horse trail for 3 hours with it and had a blast. Keeping it simple on the back end. Bars are on loan from Tri. I have never tried anything with a sweep before, but I am liking it so far. Have a good week. I did...

July 9, 2014. Riding in the Rain. It’s pretty easy. First, in the summer months, as unbearable as it might be, I ride with a full-face helmet. It affords the most protection from rain drops the size of walnuts. The next important piece of gear I wear is a set of Gore-Tex pants. They’re black, so they’re hot, but they have pockets that let me keep things like my iPhone high and dry. Plus, because of their adjustable pants cuffs, I can pull them on over boots.
