Rights Readers: Our May Author: Emily Parker

http://rightsreaders.blogspot.com/2015/05/our-may-author-emily-parker.html

Human rights-themed book discussion. Sunday, May 17, 2015. Our May Author: Emily Parker. This month we are reading Emily Parker's Now I Know Who My Comrades Are: Voices from the Internet Underground. A look at the role of internet activism in China, Cuba and Russia. Parker has a personal website. With biographical information and links to articles she has written, all worth a look. She would be fit right in at a Rights Readers discussion based on the Wall Street Journal. I especially enjoyed Guernica.

Rights Readers: Our June Author: Andre Brink

http://rightsreaders.blogspot.com/2015/06/our-june-author-andre-brink.html

Human rights-themed book discussion. Saturday, June 20, 2015. Our June Author: Andre Brink. This month we are reading Philida. A novel by the late South African writer, André Brink. The story is set in 1832, a year before slavery is abolished in South Africa, and the titular character was inspired by an actual slave woman related to Brink's family. The historical skeleton came to Brink via the Solms Delta Museum van de Caab. I also found South African History Online. In brief interviews for The Guardian.

Rights Readers: Our July Author: Louisa Lim

http://rightsreaders.blogspot.com/2015/07/our-july-author-louisa-lim.html

Human rights-themed book discussion. Saturday, July 18, 2015. Our July Author: Louisa Lim. This month we are reading The People's Republic of Amnesia: Tiananmen Revisited. By NPR China correspondent Louisa Lim. This look back at the events of 1989 and their resonance 25 years later, is my favorite of our selections so far this year. As usual, we have a few supplemental links to help expand our understanding of the book. Lim has a website. Page also provides some good links. And the Library of Congress.

http://rightsreaders.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Human rights-themed book discussion. Sunday, March 15, 2015. Our March Author: Masha Gessen. This month we are reading Words Will Break Cement: The Passion of Pussy Riot. By Masha Gessen. You can get biographical details on the author of this book detailing the history and trials of the Russian art collective Pussy Riot via Wikipedia. This Guardian article, My life as an out gay person in Russia. In addition to the video above from the University of Chicago, I recommend Gessen's audio interview. And not ...

Rights Readers: January 2015

http://rightsreaders.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Human rights-themed book discussion. Sunday, January 18, 2015. Our January Author: CJ Chivers. This month we are reading New York Times reporter, C.J. Chivers' history of the AK-47, The Gun. I highly recommend a visit to Mr. Chivers' website cjchivers.com. Good interviews providing an introduction to the book come from NPR's Fresh Air. And the World Affairs Council. Also of interest is this interview. Also talking about Syria. Or visit Control Arms. To learn more about the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty.

Photos and Flotsam from the Family Archive. Sunday, March 31, 2013. Little Hattie's Best Dress. Aunt Hattie loved to dress her nieces and nephews up in sailor suits. Here I am with cousin Ann Eggebeen in matching sailor dresses in 1963. (And what a lush backdrop Uncle Joe's glads and dahlias make! Here's Pete in 1968, with Grandma TerMaat in Hattie's kitchen, ready to set sail. I think I've discovered why Hattie favored these Victorian. Labels: Bertha Dykstra TerMaat. Photos and Flotsam from the Family Archive. Saturday, February 09, 2013. Ter Maats and the Civil War. Last summer one of my book groups read Confederates in the Attic: Dispatches from the Unfinished Civil War. Underway, every day there are many exhibits, films, books and other opportunities for learning more about this era and I've found knowing how Ter Maats were affected by the war has increased my interest in participating. So here's what I know:. The brothers would have been 25 and 21 years of age at...

Photos and Flotsam from the Family Archive. Sunday, June 30, 2013. When Dad was growing up in Sheboygan, Grandpa TerMaat supported the family driving delivery trucks, but later in life he was the bridge tender for the 8th Street drawbridge and this is how his grandkids remember him. The picture above of Grandpa enjoying the view from the bridge with grandson Chris dates from around 1957. The brick building visible in the background of the photo above is the C. Ter Maats: April 2013

http://termaats.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html

Photos and Flotsam from the Family Archive. Monday, April 01, 2013. I love the motley assortment of kids in these old one room schoolhouse photos. For a long time I thought we might have to enjoy them without knowing if any of these kids were our ancestors, but thanks to an assist from facial recognition software I think I have some answers. Young Anna is probably front row, first girl from the left. Wrote about attending Crescent School,. Location of Crescent School:. Labels: Anna TerMaat Simonsen.

Photos and Flotsam from the Family Archive. Sunday, July 18, 2010. TerMaat and B Stevens cousins visit Burton Tower. On a 1969 trip to Ann Arbor, the TerMaat kids and Brian, Lisa and Jessica Stevens went on a tour of the carillon in Burton Memorial Tower on the University of Michigan campus. Ter Maats: Gone Fishing

http://termaats.blogspot.com/2013/06/gone-fishing.html

Photos and Flotsam from the Family Archive. Sunday, June 16, 2013. For Father's Day, how about a tribute to TerMaat men fishing? First, above we have a photo of Grandpa TerMaat in Eggebeen's backyard in 1955 with a big catch. You can make up your own fish story to go with this picture as there are no other details available, other than one presumes Aunt Margaret prepared a tasty meal from this! Finally, here are a few pictures of a 1964 trip again with Grandpa TerMaat, Chris, Vern (and cameraman Dad).

Ter Maats: Family Portrait with a Reg'lar Feller

http://termaats.blogspot.com/2012/12/family-portrait-with-reglar-feller.html

Photos and Flotsam from the Family Archive. Tuesday, December 04, 2012. Family Portrait with a Reg'lar Feller. This is the only formal portrait that I know of picturing all the TerMaat siblings together. Some effort went into it as you can see that Margaret, Marion and Hattie are wearing matching dresses. And Little Connie has picked out his best tie. If you look very closely, you can see that the photographer added a little blush to the cheeks. Building an amphibious vehicle. Some things about seven...
