The Ritchies in Edinburgh and beyond

The Ritchies in Edinburgh and beyond. Tuesday, 11 August 2015. Edinburgh's Grassmarket: an excellent spot for a hanging. The Grassmarket wasn't the only place where one could be executed in Edinburgh. In fact, the city hangman was somewhat spoilt for choice, what with the Tolbooth (prison) being just up the hill by St Giles' Cathedral. (Look out for the Heart of Midlothian marked on the cobblestones.). Most of the tenements around the square are nineteenth century replacements for the mediaeval originals...

The Ritchies in Edinburgh and beyond: June 2015

http://www.ritchiesinedinburgh.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html

The Ritchies in Edinburgh and beyond. Monday, 1 June 2015. Crying freedom in the Western Cape. Returning from St Helena via the Winelands of the Western Cape was an inspired decision. We fell in love with the landscape, lush vineyards stretching to the feet of craggy mountains, old farms nestling in between. We revelled in the warmth of the Mediterranean climate. And yet, and yet. We both agree that we will probably never return. This post explains why. Many surnames, street and house names are still Fre...

The Ritchies in Edinburgh and beyond. Thursday, 28 August 2014. A day out from London: Hever Castle, where Anne Boleyn changed the course of history. What could be more typically English than this first view of Hever Castle in Kent? It looks so quiet and peaceful, yet what happened here not only transformed the way England worshipped and was governed, but also had a significant influence on the course of Scottish history. It was here at Hever that Anne Boleyn was brought up, from her birth in c1501 until...

The Ritchies in Edinburgh and beyond. Friday, 7 February 2014. School fees: to pay or not to pay. 8216; Please, madam, could you help me with my school fees? The young woman who had stopped me as I walked up our lane was about 15 or 16 and dressed in a neat and clean school uniform. I had no idea who she was. It was January 2010, six months after our arrival in Kampala and just before pupils returned for the new school session. How should I react? 8216; No,. 8216; But I really need the money, madam,.

The Ritchies in Edinburgh and beyond. Tuesday, 29 July 2014. Rescuing Edinburgh's Royal Mile: Riddle's Court, Gladstone's Land and the Lawnmarket. Indeed, what we see in much of the Royal Mile today is lucky to have survived. By the end of the nineteenth century, the Old Town was an insanitary slum. Developers had started demolishing some of the most ancient and crumbling tenements, which had towered over its overcrowded squares and squalid closes for centuries. For at that time Edinburgh University had ...

The Ritchies in Edinburgh and beyond. Sunday, 19 April 2015. St Helena: haven, prison, refuge. What comes into people's minds when they hear the name St Helena. Chances are that two vague memories come to the surface: firstly the island's remoteness and secondly its association with Napoleon. The two statements are, of course, connected. The thick tropical forest was gradually felled to build houses and mend ships. Most of the tall Norfolk pines were used as replacement masts, though some were saved ...

http://lynn60.blogspot.com/2014/02/you-only-live-once.html

Sunday, 9 February 2014. You Only Live Once. The days are long but the years are short. Approaching Sixty. It could be grim, it could be scary but I have chosen for it to be otherwise. The most wasted of all days is one without laughter! Saturday, November 12, 2011. I just looked over my list and was able to check off some items. K is in kindergarten so he is learning his numbers and letters(numbers 19 and 20). Over fall break the kids and I went to the dentist(25). Only Vin and I had cavities. His are fixed, still working on mine. Can I say 28 is done? 50) I have been using coupons since June(52). Twice I have saved over $40 on groceries because of sales and coupons! 31 note to my kids.
