The Scritchy Nib: December 2013
http://thescritchynib.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html
Tuesday, December 31, 2013. A brief hello and recap; or, one last post for 2013. Yes, this is me blogging on New Year's Eve, because I've been spending the day taking care of all those little fiddly tasks that just never quite get done because I don't want them to carry over into the new year, and that includes blogging. My next-younger sister and her family came out to Utah to visit for a month this summer, which was great. Lots of partying and shoe shopping for bridesmaid shoes and such. They a...In ad...

Books, j'adore. Tenets of j’adore. The Hero and the Crown, Robin McKinley. May 21, 2015. April 23, 2015. Although the mother of one of my oldest friend gifted me both The Hero and the Crown. And The Blue Sword. For my birthday a few years ago, the books had ended up on my to-read shelf and I’d basically forgotten about them until we hosted our annual pancake party back in February. These books have such unassuming little spines, and although they’re readable in a day (I know, because I read Hero. I’d lik...

The Combustible Plot | The Note Taker

As a writer of fantasy novels, I’ve been reading a lot of them. Well, I always read a lot of them; now I can pretend that I have a reason for that. And not just the ones that hit the. New York Times Book Review. Such as Erin Morganstern’s glorious. My first two books have young women as protagonists, putting them in the ever-fluid category of Young Adult, or YA. That’s why I adore Ursula Le Guin. They create their worlds and characters before starting in on the adventures. It helps, of course, that I...

Important subjects do not guarantee decent playwriting. This week, I have seen two plays about Jews and the Holocaust. A new play by Paula Vogel, in a reading that was very well acted and directed. Complex, full of imagery, song, and dance, the show blew me away. After I finished blowing my nose not because of some easily sentimental claptrap, but because the play is beautifully painful I felt wonderful, because I’d seen something so inspiring. Rewriting, getting ready for a full production. See, in film...

Friday, May 27, 2011. CONTEST IS OVER TIME FOR WINNERS! There is a winner for the Bookies contest and it is. We interrupt this artificially extended moment of tension to say - What the hell is up with blogger? Why is the follower box not working again? This is almost enough to make me want to switch to Wordpress, except then I'll have no follower box at all, so it really doesn't solve the problem. And the winner, determined by Random.org. She really is lovely! You can see her lovely blog. Because, well, ...

January 18th, 2015. It’s been a long time. A long, long, long time since there was a new cinépoem in the house. Two whole years, in fact. So I’m beyond ecstatic to announce a new cinépoem featuring the lovely Lucette de Luna (for the second time) and introducing the gorgeous and frighteningly talented Caroline Augusta. A formidable artist in her own right.). For all my cinépoems, and it will probably show up on vimeo before too long, as well. Go take a gander. There is nothing civilized. Of hoof and horn.

Reading List Enero-Marzo 2014. Martes, 25 de marzo de 2014. He empezado el año vaga, para qué os voy a mentir si no me apetece. Lo cierto es que me encantan las reimaginaciones de cuentos clásicos - Jackson Pearce. No está nada mal y Robin McKinley. Good fun, no guilt. No hay mucho más que pueda decir de ellas. Son un escapismo fenomenal y si no te ríes con Magnus, estás muerto por dentro :). Oh, Mark Lawrence, let me love you! Cansancio vital con las sagas extraalargadas. Por último, estoy a mitad de Ma...

Caroline the Future Librarian. Caroline Davis LIBR 265-10 SJSU Wrenn-Estes. Flight (Volume 1) by Kazu Kibuishi. Title: Flight (Volume One). Critical Evaluation: Aside from being an impressive collection in its own right, the first volume of the. Series would serve as a great introduction to the graphic novel genre. Rather than sticking to a narrow vision or visual style (for instance, only featuring art that resembles the anime style),. Is a phenomenal book and deserves a spot on the shelf. 3) Did you fi...
