Rob's Sri Lanka trip 2015. Cycling the island's End to End: Dondra Head to Point Pedro. Monday, 23 February 2015. Day 41 (India): Kovalam. Though very touristy, with lots of middle-aged Europeans and Russians here to do yoga and meditation, and a beachfront chock-full with cafes, traditional massage and health spas, restaurants, souvenir shops and travel agents, it's also a real working fishing village (pic). Rob's Sri Lanka trip 2015: Day 30 (India): Kollam

Rob's Sri Lanka trip 2015. Cycling the island's End to End: Dondra Head to Point Pedro. Thursday, 12 February 2015. Day 30 (India): Kollam. Kerala is famous for its backwaters: a 100km-plus chain of canals, channels, lakes and ponds, that you can explore by various boat services and tours. I did one from Kollam today, which punted us through tiny villages that are only accessible by water. This what a potential traffic jam looks like (pic). Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Rob's Sri Lanka trip 2015. Cycling the island's End to End: Dondra Head to Point Pedro. Thursday, 5 February 2015. With an evening train to catch, and my bike entrusted to the Railway Parcel Office, I had another easy day. Most of the activity consisted of reading books and magazines in the British Council library (I could get into Adam Mars-Jones, you know), drinking tea and smoothies in local cafes, and enjoying delicious Rs200 vegetarian thalis (pic). Rob's Sri Lanka trip 2015. Cycling the island's End to End: Dondra Head to Point Pedro. Friday, 13 February 2015. Day 31 (India): Kollam to Alleppey. Most of today was taken up with the eight-hour boat journey from Kollam to Alleppey. There was enough time in the morning, though, to walk round Kollam town watching the place wake up. This man buying a bucket from a cycling street vendor was clearly keen to examine his purchase carefully. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. Day 19...

Robʼs South America trip 2014: Day 85: Rio de Janeiro

http://robsa14.blogspot.com/2014/12/day-84-rio-de-janeiro_4.html

Robʼs South America trip 2014. Dispatches from 11 Sep to 11 Dec 2014, visiting Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia etc. Thursday, 4 December 2014. Day 85: Rio de Janeiro. Some locals found even more effort-free ways of doing the path than me. Most of the bike path is segregated, but a few joining bits suffer from the same problems as urban cycle lanes everywhere, such as cars parked in them. Or, being Brazil, double-parked (pic). Yesterday with ultra-cheap beer. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Health and Safety employees had better look away now. Today's excitement was to ride, with some fellow backpackers (hello Susan, Sue, Linda), across a deep ravine in a tarabita. Pic) This is defined on Spanish Wikipedia as un primitivo teleférico utilizado en ciertas regiones de los andes. Primitivo it certainly is, but thrilling.

After all the excitement of Machu Picchu, Wednesday (Day 49) was a recovery day eating very nice ceviche. In Cuzco for 7 soles (£1.50) from San Pedro market, and Thursday (Day 50) was spent mostly on a bus through awesome valley scenery to Puno, on the shores of Lake Titicaca, 3800m up. Robʼs South America trip 2014: Day 89: Medellín

http://robsa14.blogspot.com/2014/12/day-89-medellin.html

Robʼs South America trip 2014. Dispatches from 11 Sep to 11 Dec 2014, visiting Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia etc. Monday, 8 December 2014. Curiously, after yesterday's jokey reference to bike campaigners asking for more generous cyclestreets days, today it seemed that had actually happened. It was a national holiday, meaning the shops were mostly shut, and people were out on bikes taking advantage of yet more closed-off roads (pic). Perhaps I should try joking about winning the lottery.

Robʼs South America trip 2014. Dispatches from 11 Sep to 11 Dec 2014, visiting Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia etc. Tuesday, 2 December 2014. Day 83: Rio de Janeiro. My last few days before the next few are being spent in Rio de Janeiro. The Portuguese named it after 'Rio', meaning 'River', and 'Janeiro', meaning 'January'. They're not very good at names, because there isn't a river here, and it's not January most of the time. The view down to the city is pretty spectacular, too (pic) – the summit...

Yorkshire Ridings: About Yorkshire Ridings

http://yorkshireridings.blogspot.com/p/about-yorkshire-ridings.html

Exploring England's greatest county by bike. The three Yorkshire Ridings – North, West, East – are the historic divisions of Yorkshire. England's largest county. And, of course, by 'Yorkshire' I mean the proper historical county, not the post-1974 nonsense. But this blog is about bike trips. From spring 2015 I'll be doing a series of rides from my home in York to explore the county and look for its heart and soul. What makes Yorkshire Yorkshire? I'll write up my experiences here. Yorkshire Ridings: Beverley: Wolds apart

http://yorkshireridings.blogspot.com/2015/05/wolds-apart-beverley.html

Exploring England's greatest county by bike. Tuesday, May 19, 2015. Beverley (picture), at the edge of the gentle Wolds, is one of our great secrets: a fine, characterful Georgian market town with its own brand of Yorkshireness. While it has plenty in common with the county's other market towns such as Richmond – a fondness for turning potentially pedestrianised-showcase market squares into car parks, for instance – it's also distinct, very much East Riding rather than North or West. With a tailwind on a...

Robʼs South America trip 2014. Dispatches from 11 Sep to 11 Dec 2014, visiting Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia etc. Sunday, 30 November 2014. Day 81: Ilha Grande. Ilha Grande, Brazil's third-largest island, is a delight, packed with forests, beaches, hiking trails, bars and restaurants, domestic tourists, and stray dogs. I spent two nights here, at the hostel whose terrace – on the extreme left of the pic (pic) – overlooks the bay. Our destination was a couple of lovely beaches (pic) where we swam.

Robʼs South America trip 2014. Dispatches from 11 Sep to 11 Dec 2014, visiting Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia etc. Sunday, 7 December 2014. Day 88: Medellín, Santa Fé de Antioquia. Sunday mornings in Medellín see a few selected bits of road closed off to traffic so that cyclists can enjoy them (pic) – a mini version of Bogotá's Ciclovia, which I blogged about on Day 4. Cyclists of Medellín, rise up! Make it bigger and better and more generous! Arví park is supposed offer free bike hire, but the system ...

Canadian Politics 101: Right Wing, Left Wing or Centre. August 22, 2013. There was a post on Facebook that didn’t sound right, well right wing anyway. I decided to look up left wing and right wing politics to make sure I had it right. So I started at the beginning. The beginning of Canada anyway. Canada’s first elected government was Liberal Conservative. What the heck is that? The Oxford Canadian Dictionary defines left and right wing as:. Left wing: the radical or socialist section of a political party.
