Roger's Soaring Blog

Saturday, April 25, 2015. After 12 years of soaring, I have decided to stop, at least for now. If circumstances change, maybe I’ll return, but not in the foreseeable future. I probably owe an explanation to my readers and friends in aviation, so here goes. I’ve achieved my goals. In 12 years, here’s some of what I’ve accomplished:. 328 flights totaling 169 hours. Half the time was in Blanik L13’s, 1/4 in PW5, 1/4 in Grob 103’s. Flown from eight locations in three states. Conducted ground school classes.

Roger's Soaring Blog: May 2013

http://rogersoaring.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html

Friday, May 31, 2013. The Mallettec Mini Vario. What's that thing on your hat? People occasionally ask. It's the Mini Vario from Mallettec. I've had one for a long time - I'm not sure just when I bought it. I'm writing about it today just because I finally had to replace the batteries after 6 or 7 years. I really believe in having backups for systems, because they have saved my neck a few times. In my first contest - one of my first cross-county flights. My only complaint is I wish it were a little loude...

Roger's Soaring Blog: February 2014

http://rogersoaring.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html

Saturday, February 08, 2014. Is California City the new Hemet? The chain of events are somewhat similar… maybe the underlying causes are similar too. It is not really about airport safety. If it was about safety, then airport officials would work with the various aviation groups at the airport to effect improvements. Attempting to address safety issues when they are not really the issue is pointless. It is not really about airport growth. The motivation is probably personal gain, not the public interest.

Roger's Soaring Blog: Back in the (small) saddle

http://rogersoaring.blogspot.com/2014/11/back-in-small-saddle.html

Sunday, November 23, 2014. Back in the (small) saddle. The weather looked OK for Friday: a relatively clear day between the passing of a minor front and then the arrival of Santa Ana winds. The forecast was for northeast winds, which aren't really good for either thermal flying or wave lift at this location, but it looked like ridge soaring might develop. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). There was an error in this gadget. Back in the (small) saddle. First flight in PW6. California, United States.

Roger's Soaring Blog: August 2014

http://rogersoaring.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Thursday, August 28, 2014. A few stats from my logbook. I just completed selling an old Blanik L13 for my club. This particular ship had been crashed, and totaled by the insurance company, but was really not damaged very much. As I wrote the final email to the buyer I mentioned that I would miss the ship, having made 75 flights in it. That made me wonder just how many flights I have made in which ships. So I ran some stats from my electronic logbook. Links to this post. Sunday, August 17, 2014. Both have...

Sunday, June 22, 2014. End of an Era: Orange County Soaring Association merging into Cypress Soaring Inc. OCSA's Grob 103 and PW5 will transfer to CSI. For the foreseeable future, they will both remain at Crystalaire and will be available for flight by CSI members. Current and former OCSA members may transfer to Cypress. OCSA's one viable Blanik L13 and another Blanik fuselage, wings, parts, and trailers are for sale, listed on Wings and Wheels. Contact information is in the advertisements. I found that ...

Making Time for Flying: January 2011

http://makingtimeforflying.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html

Making Time for Flying. Monday, January 17, 2011. Review: Fly and Earn Aerial Photography Business Kit. At first I didn't completely get the tagline on the front page of flyandearn.com. Your “$100 Hamburger” days are over. Let your “$1,000 Saturdays” begin. I mean, sure, we can all find a way to spend $1000 in one day of flying, but earning. As a private pilot? Jay Taffet is the man behind flyandearn.com and was kind enough to give me a copy of the Fly and Earn Aerial Photography Business Kit. Air Operat...

Sink Happens - A Soaring Pilot's Journey: The agony of it all.

http://sinkhappens.blogspot.com/2015/08/the-agony-of-it-all.html

Sink Happens - A Soaring Pilot's Journey. Thursday, August 6, 2015. The agony of it all. It turns out that you need to accomplish 2 of the 3 Silver badge requirements (climb and duration) to take one of our club's Schweizer gliders cross country. And you need the actual badge to take the Discus cross country. Makes sense. You can't just take an airplane that isn't your glider out and about without proper training. And climbed that high. Having those (Silver) numbers to shoot for are good, but anyone will...

Commercial Pilot CPL/IR ME. With both JAA and FAA certificates. November 01, 2011. The last couple of weeks have been nothing but fog and low clouds over most of southern Norway, which is hardly ideal weather for a skill test, but as the day of my skill test for the JAA multi engine commercial pilot certificate and instrument rating arrived yesterday, it was clear skies and not a cloud in sight. The Soaring Laboratory: September 2011

September 20, 2011. This week we had some local fires that were started by dry lightning. Overall a bad thing but it did provide an opportunity to capture the daily afternoon phenomena of the breeze front (AKA Sea Breeze Front. Pushing through the Tehachapi, CA valley on it's way to spilling into the desert floor near Mojave, CA. The breeze front is the cool stable air from the San Joaquin Valley. Blog do Roger Soares.
