http://rompingjapan.blogspot.com/2007/07/nature-of-shalom-forest.html

A two month journey through the Land of the Rising Sun. Thursday, July 5, 2007. The Nature of Shalom Forest. Shalom no Mori was one beautiful place. I could have spent months hiking, finding new and interesting natural spectacles. And I don't mean eyeglasses! Although I guess finding naturally made glasses would be quite a natural spectacle, indeed. Anyway, so let me tell you about the Forest of Shalom itself, and it's history. A calm section of the mountain stream. Okay, so I like mountain streams and w...

http://rompingjapan.blogspot.com/2007/07/meet-family.html

A two month journey through the Land of the Rising Sun. Wednesday, July 4, 2007. Or ever, for that matter. My first reaction was hesitation, but I very soon realized that this is just a regular thing over here in Japan. And that's just how it turned out- very regular, and extremely relaxing (There is a giant "hot tub" type thing, and a sauna). It also made me feel much more accepted by their family, and much more comfortable around them. So let's meet the Komoriyas! Shintaro, the dog. Anri, 5, ninja queen.

A two month journey through the Land of the Rising Sun. Tuesday, July 17, 2007. Teaches ceramics classes for all ages, and is the manager for an organic rice cooperative in the area. The following article sums up his pottery background very well:. The work at the Sugiyamas house varied according to the weather. If the weather permitted, the work was maintaining the rice paddies and preparing a new one for planting. I got to learn a lot about organic rice paddies! Planting rice in the paddy. A two month journey through the Land of the Rising Sun. Friday, June 29, 2007. A Day's Work, part deux. I think we can all agree that I look really cool in this photo. All of this work with logs and cabins and saws made me feel a bit (a very wee bit) like Dick Proenneke. Having seen the short film about him, Alone in the Wilderness. After cutting the logs, we would load them up in a truck and drive them down to the river. We set up a power washer which I then used to strip off all the bark. First use hig...

Romping Japan

http://rompingjapan.blogspot.com/2007/07/grape-farming.html

A two month journey through the Land of the Rising Sun. Thursday, July 12, 2007. So basically, Ogihara-san rules. The grapes are valued for their asthetic beauty and their taste, and are often given by wealthy businessmen as gifts. One bosomy bunch of Peony grapes, which is typically a count of 30, sells in Tokyo specialty shops for around 5,000¥, roughly $47. Damn! A Peony bunch, before pruning. The same bunch, post-pruning. Yours truly, pruning. Apparently I am a champion Peony pruner. Hi People, i wou...

May 1st, 2014. Current location: Rejikiavic, Iceland. It’s almost comical how nice it is 2 weeks after I started. I lost heart on the ride after catching that bus, I’m not entirely sure why. In any case I figure I cycled about half the country which leaves me a reason to come back someday. My favorite place has to have been Breidalsvic. The locals there were really nice and let me camp behind the hotel and gave me some licorice vodka to keep me warm. A Cold Summers Day. April 25th, 2014. Riding on the hi...

successful as scouting, spring 08

Successful as scouting, spring 08. Sunday, June 15, 2008. This is a bit dated, but philip just sent me this picture, taken the day i arrived back in budapest from my bike trip. i miss that bike. In the present: monday night i stayed in narbonne with a french couchsurfer named valerie. that town felt great- i read by its tree-lined canal for a few hours while i waited for valerie to get off from work. she was very generous, driving me out to the beach for a walk and cooking me dinner. Thursday was daydrea...

Romping with Riley

The antics of a fuzzy pup. Thursday, March 20, 2014. Another non-dog related post. but here are three things on my mind, in no particular order. 1. Spring! Next Fall I'm making a grade level switch. Sixth grade is moving to the Junior High (will be Middle School) after next year, and I'm not waiting around to see if there's an opening for me at that point. I have only taught 5th and 6th grade, so this will be a big jump and quite the challenge, but I'm super excited about it! Tuesday, January 21, 2014.
