Tramping (Hiking) in Karamea. Karamea is an excellent place year-round for tramping. Its northerly latitude and subtropical climate means that routes such as the Heaphy. Tracks are some of the best options for tramping outside of the summer season. Trout fishing in the rivers and streams of the Kahurangi National Park is world class. Walk the first few hours of the track, and return. A 1084m peak which overlooks Karamea – a challenging but rewarding trip. Fenian Track/Oparara Valley Track.

A must do in Karamea is to visit the start of the Heaphy Track at Kohaihai and walk along the beautiful West Coast beaches and through spectacular groves of Nikau Palms. There are a number of walks radiating from the DOC campsite at the end of the road. Total Time: 1.5 hr return.
