Welcome! We are Max and Emma Akroyd. We live on a smallholding in Finistère with our five children. Unconvinced that industrial society can be relied upon indefinitely, for the last three years we have been working like peasants to convert six acres of rough pasture into something which will feed our family. Last of the winter salad (78 days to go…) |

https://ruralidiocy.wordpress.com/2011/03/17/last-of-the-winter-salad-78-days-to-go

Welcome to our home…. A handmade peasant life. Last of the winter salad (78 days to go…). This post is simply a retrospective tribute to some humble salad crops which have been significant contributors to our diet since New Year. Thanks to their existence within the weedy ranks of the polytunnel beds, the first three months of the calendar year aren’t such a fearsome prospect any more. This slideshow requires JavaScript. A long post for the shortest day |

https://ruralidiocy.wordpress.com/2011/12/21/a-long-post-for-the-shortest-day

Welcome to our home…. A handmade peasant life. A long post for the shortest day. Sorry for the slight delay in posting! It’s been a befuddling time on the farm since we last spoke. Big changes have taken place in this household, most of them positive but all of them very distracting. Readers of longstanding will recall that I aimed to feed myself from my field. Am I succeeding? I can’t overstate, however, how well it had all been going up to that point. The generous weather, and the related abu...This gl...

3 things to do in the garden when it’s dry (41 days to go…) |

https://ruralidiocy.wordpress.com/2011/04/20/3-things-to-do-in-the-garden-when-its-dry-41-days-to-go

Welcome to our home…. A handmade peasant life. 3 things to do in the garden when it’s dry (41 days to go…). There’s no time to stand around inside:. 1 Dig a trench or three. In recent days I easily shifted 100 metres-worth of dusty soil thus. (I asked Emma to capture this scene of impressive toil on camera, but in these conditions it just looked like a fat bloke digging on the moon). 4 Try and forget about those withered early sowings. Leave the garden behind and go for a nice, quiet, meditative walk.

Welcome to our home…. A handmade peasant life. Bean pole challenge (40 days to go…). Brought to you with the help of Ben Short, frequent commenter on this blog – who has been staying in the gite with his lovely family this week – I humbly present our interpretation of the patented McCarthy Bean Structure. Vegetables for pigs scheme (80 days to go…) |

https://ruralidiocy.wordpress.com/2011/03/15/vegetables-for-pigs-scheme-80-days-to-go

Welcome to our home…. A handmade peasant life. Vegetables for pigs scheme (80 days to go…). Welcome to the Mummy pigs’ field! The resulting plan which emerged from this mental soup actually only took an hour to execute. I then selected 25 of my biggest, ugliest tubers from last year and planted them through the mulch. kervéguen gite: Les Monts d'Arrée

http://kerveguengite.blogspot.com/2009/03/les-monts-darree.html

Escape to the rural heart of Brittany. Within easy reach of the gite are forests, lakes and the spectacular west coast of Brittany. About 15 minutes' drive to the north of Kervéguen gite is another sort of landscape altogether: the open moorland of Les Monts d'Arée. Although only 1000 feet high these ancient hills make up for their lack of stature with spectacular views to the north coast and over central Brittany. A great place for a walk on a hot summer day or a cold winter morning. Kervéguen gite is n...

Escape to the rural heart of Brittany. What our recent guests said:. From the guestbook, all the comments we've received this season:. The gite is so clean, fresh, tidy and well-equipped - it has everything you need for a comfortable stay. We will definitely be back later this year, but for longer than one week! Thank you so much Max, Emma and family for a fabulous, relaxing week! Mr and Mrs M., Monmouthshire (14-21 March 2009). Mr and Mrs D., Devon (15 - 22 May 2009). We have had a wonderful week, lovel...

kervéguen gite: Les forêts

http://kerveguengite.blogspot.com/2009/01/les-forets.html

Escape to the rural heart of Brittany. One of the best things about the centre of Finistère is the forest. Miles and miles of footpaths run through peaceful, ancient and sometimes mysterious woodland. It's a walker's and cyclist's paradise. The national park around Huelgoat (less than 10 minutes away) is, rightly, famous. But there are also days and days of discovery in other nearby forests where you'll be undisturbed from one end of the day to another. Our Brittany Ferries listing is here. Kervéguen git...

kervéguen gite: Beaches

http://kerveguengite.blogspot.com/2008/07/beaches.html

Escape to the rural heart of Brittany. Brittany is a big place. Staying on one of the coasts means a. Drive if you want to visit any of the others. The central position of Kervéguen gite means the north and west coasts are only an hour away and much of the south coast about two hours by car. Plestin-les-Grèves is one hour to the north:. St Nic is one hour to the west:. As you can see, the beaches of Brittany aren't overcrowded! Our Brittany Ferries listing is here. Beat the credit/currency crunch! Kervég...

kervéguen art: Green landscape

http://wwwkerveguenart.blogspot.com/2009/09/green-landscape.html

Monday, 14 September 2009. After taking the painting outside to work on, I quickly changed my mind as the autumnal wind whipped up and blew the easel over on to my head! So the painting was finished off in the studio. It symbolised the end of the summer to me, as this painting has accompanied me through the holidays, looking after children and animals and managing to grab a few hours here and there to paint. 20cm X 20cm oil on canvas 245€ unframed. Oil on canvas 60cm X 50cm 645€. Fruit on blue plate.

kervéguen art

http://wwwkerveguenart.blogspot.com/2009/08/ive-been-standing-at-end-of-our-drive.html

Monday, 3 August 2009. I've been standing at the end of our drive painting this scene, trying to create a sort of stormy feel. The only problem being that it's been fairly sunny here so getting the colours right is mainly from memory. I wanted to capture the temperament of the Breton landscape in rain swept conditions. I've used a warm grey and titanium white for the sky and raw umber, raw sienna and terre vert for the trees. 20cm X 20cm oil on canvas 245€ unframed. Oil on canvas 60cm X 50cm 645€.

Thursday, 13 August 2009. Things are progressing with the painting. It's amazing how many people you meet when you paint outside, even on a small country road! I think in hindsight it would have been a lot easier if I had done a poster study beforehand as balancing out the colour values as I go is tricky. Also the light changes depending on the weather and having a reminder of the colours would have been useful. 20cm X 20cm oil on canvas 245€ unframed. Oil on canvas 60cm X 50cm 645€. kervéguen art: Alterations

http://wwwkerveguenart.blogspot.com/2009/02/alterations.html

Saturday, 7 February 2009. I decided to change the composition a bit and create more drama by darkening the foreground and creating a path leading into the picture from the right. The balance of tones is working better now although I think I'll soften the dominant hills in the next sitting. I'll also start building more detail into the foreground, adding grasses and hawthorne. 20cm X 20cm oil on canvas 245€ unframed. Oil on canvas 60cm X 50cm 645€. Oil on canvas 30cm X 40cm 495€.
