Taipei Personality

Taipei, Taiwan. Thoughts and experiences right there, and in the realm of the abstract. Pictures too. An especially bulbous . Upon arriving, it was a short walk to the park, which is notable for it's sandstone formations. As the sandstone gets eroded by tides, wind, and other sand in the water and wind, the harder layer on top remains. This produces fragile looking protrusions from the ground that have the potential to resemble human figures, like Taiwan's famous Nephertiti Head. . Whipped up by the wind.

Lijiang Times: May 2009
http://lijiangtimes.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 12 May 2009. Meat fire = broil/roast. Fresh from the Naxiology desk, comes the latest "interesting similarities between the Chinese and Dongba scripts" post. Time for another ideogrammic compound - this time its meat fire. Which, in Chinese, gives us 炙 zhi, and in Dongba we get bʏ˧. Dongba on the left! Here we can again see the slightly more explicit, less stylised "pictographic" Dongba character, but the elements in the Chinese character are easily identifiable too. Thursday, 7 May 2009. Zhang ...

Lijiang Times: Even in the Dongba script, sun+moon = bright!
http://lijiangtimes.blogspot.com/2009/04/even-in-dongba-script-sunmoon-bright.html
Sunday, 26 April 2009. Even in the Dongba script, sun moon = bright! The Dongba character for bright, bu˧. Is another ideogrammic compound, composed of the characters for sun and moon, both emitting light. This is if course, almost identical to the Chinese 明, with the sun on the left and the moon on the right, only in the Chinese there is no pictorial representation of the rays of light. Here they are together (Dongba on the left! Labels: chinese character classification. 27 April 2009 at 21:33. The Dong...

Lijiang Times: Practical Uses of Dongbawen No. 1 - The Dongba's Phonebook
http://lijiangtimes.blogspot.com/2009/06/practical-uses-of-dongbawen-no-1.html
Wednesday, 17 June 2009. Practical Uses of Dongbawen No. 1 - The Dongba's Phonebook. One of the common misconceptions about the Dongba script is that it's not really a living, working writing system. Phish! You can see here that the most common family name is Ho (Chinese 和 he), the Naxi character for which means 'ribs'. Ho is a traditional Naxi family name (and incidentally the name of all the Dongbas at the research institute). 5 July 2009 at 17:35. Heidi(Hong Xingyao), Rockville, MD. He Xiudong has tol...

Lijiang Times: Quotes of the week, from Lijiang's local rag
http://lijiangtimes.blogspot.com/2009/05/quotes-of-week-from-lijiangs-local-rag.html
Thursday, 7 May 2009. Quotes of the week, from Lijiang's local rag. Normally, I don't like local newspapers. And I used to work for one. But the Lijiang Weekly News 丽江新闻周报 has a few things going for it - well, on reflection one thing going for it - it's short. Whilst the news is excruciatingly local - this week there is a full page story on how some people are illegally crossing at a cordoned off pedestrian crossing (. Dean of the China People's University and doctoral supervisor, professor Ji Baocheng.

Taipei Personality: A Week of Culture (Jiu Fen, Chinese cooking class, and our Closing Ceremony)

Taipei, Taiwan. Thoughts and experiences right there, and in the realm of the abstract. Pictures too. A Week of Culture (Jiu Fen, Chinese cooking class, and our Closing Ceremony). 大家好!(Dà jiā hǎo! That means, "Hello everyone.". The old style street. These streets are filled with all sorts of people. Your typical American college students studying Chinese, your miscellaneous Asian tourist, popping over to Taiwan, and quite a few friendly, if slightly over the top, vendors. A sassy vender in 九份. I've been ...
