Welcome to Fabulous | Rumblings

Hope, Humour, and Other Eschatological Goodies. By Ryan on June 30, 2015. For the first few days of this week, I find myself in, of all places, Las Vegas, NV. My wife is attending a conference here so I tagged along for a short getaway. It’s nearly 45 degrees Celsius here during the day. It cools off to the mid 30’s at night. Walking outside is like stepping into an oven. Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas. All of a sudden they stopped in the middle of the concourse. She looked up at him, and she just sta...

Hope, Humour, and Other Eschatological Goodies. By Ryan on July 15, 2015. I’ve tried to sit down and write something substantive here a few times over the past week and a half or so, but for whatever reason(s), the words haven’t come. Maybe it’s just because the last few weeks have been unusually full. Maybe I’m out of words. Maybe my spirit (and the Internet) is in need of a prolonged period of digital silence. Maybe I just need a vacation. Issues, and that because we’re the ones that brought Christiani...

Hope, Humour, and Other Eschatological Goodies. How Not to Cross a Boundary. By Ryan on August 12, 2015. Gretta Vosper has been making headlines for a while now. She’s the pastor of West Hill United Church in Toronto. She also claims to be an atheist. According to a recent article at Vice News. The other thing that strikes me about Gretta Vosper’s story is how utterly, predictably, yawn-inducingly symptomatic it is of our cultural moment. A Christianity that has little use for a higher power that mig...

Hope, Humour, and Other Eschatological Goodies. By Ryan on July 2, 2015. Ho hum. Fake replicas of ancient Greece and Paris and Venice and New York? Obviously. Artificial thunderstorms with rainfall in a shopping mall? Yawn Ok, who wants to impress me next? But even amidst all the artificiality and sybaritic fervour that. Las Vegas, it is a city whose streets exhibit the same social inequalities as any other big city. The people begging on the street in Vegas might be a bit more. Well, you can’t help all.
Daughters | Rumblings

Hope, Humour, and Other Eschatological Goodies. By Ryan on August 5, 2015. I ran into two friends this morning for whom the month of August is an excruciating one. Two fathers for whom August is the anniversary of the unimaginably painful loss of a young daughter. For both, August brings an acute reminder of the ever-present reality of the gaping wound at the heart of their lives. For both, August means the rehearsal of a crippling loss that no parent should have to endure. There is or at least there.

I shot this sunset recently in my backyard in Ohio’s Amish country. Windmills for pumping water on Amish farms are commonplace in Holmes Co., Ohio. Filed under Ohio's Amish country.

Writing and reading and exploring life. Soren Kierkegaard is taking a well-deserved rest this week. I sat down in my white wooden rocking chair and gazed at my bookshelf. It sits against the wall beside the big window in my bedroom and is full to the brim with all my favorite books. Well, not all. Some are still residing in Rubbermaid tubs. There are so many books here, many of which have been started but not finished. I need to finish some of these. With thought came action: I put down. Story of the chu...

Roadkill Crossing, and other tales from Amish Country. December 28, 2015 · 7:23 am. Humans did their part to make 2015 another goofy year. The main headlines of this tumultuous year may have overshadowed some lesser but still noteworthy news. Here are a few I logged. A North Walsham, England man paid a veterinarian the equivalent of $460 U.S. to do surgery on his three-inch pet goldfish. The European Space Agency reported that the Hubble telescope spotted a galaxy that resembled a smiley face. A 17-year ...

Thursday, January 5, 2012. Who do you see? A simple question: Who do you see? Is a mirror you are looking into (or a webcam showing yourself). What and who do you see? If we are to be the reflection of Christ, to be his incarnation in our world,. Do you see Jesus? When people look at you do they notice someone with compassion and humility? Someone who goes out of their way to connect with the ordinary, those in need? Do they hear a voice filled with love and affirmation? Jesus, or a Pharisee? Subscribe t...

Wednesday, September 14, 2011. Dogs, cats, and the least of these. I just returned from a week back home in Alberta. My lovely niece got married, and that gave me a great reason to go back and visit the family. Once my sister had recuperated from her mother of the bride duties, I spent a few days out relaxing at their place in the country. I missed seeing some of the friends I usually get to see, but that’s how it goes sometimes. Here I am. I love you. See how much I love you? Do you hear me? And we don&...

Monday, April 11, 2011. The times (part 3). I’ve already written a couple posts on changing times ( here. Less concrete in terms of dates and magnitude, but earth shattering none the less are the underground explosions on the theological front. This is probably the place to mention Fred Phelps (Westboro Baptist Church) and Terry Jones (Koran burning pastor) who are doing a lot of shaking on their own.). My forecast is for continued unrest and scattered conflict, giving rise to wide-spread turmoil and uph...
Al's Musings: Christmas spirit?
http://al-muses.blogspot.com/2011/12/christmas-spirit.html
Thursday, December 15, 2011. If you are into Christmas at all, you probably subconsciously search and long for the ‘Christmas Spirit’. Naively we might expect that that Christmas Spirit is the same for everyone. That is far from the case. Each of us has that inner combination of nirvana, utopia, childhood memories (colored by the passage of time), and zeal that styles itself as ‘The Perfect Christmas’. That is what we tend to long for; the reincarnation of something that actually never was. There’s...
