Dispatches from the Mountains

Dispatches from the Mountains. McCormick Peak (6.23.09). The unassuming peaks of the Ninemile Range. Blackrock Peak visible, 10 minutes into the climb. I made it from trailhead to summit to trailhead in 2 1/2 hours this morning, and that was taking my sweet time. So, really, if someone got off work in Missoula at 5pm, they could be up and down before sunset in the Montana summer. Man, I love it when I surprisingly remind myself why I love Missoula. Ahhh, Missoula. Blackrock Peak, from McCormick Peak.

http://www.ryanwnorton.blogspot.com/2009/04/better-know-mountain-stuart-peak.html

Dispatches from the Mountains. Better Know A Mountain: Stuart Peak (4.22.09). It was my third time summiting Stuart, hence this picture:. What followed was 5-6 miles of pure bushwhack: steep sides, rocky cliffs, slappy brambles. I saw a couple sets of bear tracks which was pretty cool. As minute melted into minute the rough going started to get old, although the creek was steadily growing wider and deeper. This is Cathy commenting on Bill's address. Wow, how exciting that hike must have been!

Dispatches from the Mountains: The Fan-Tastic Creek (5.13-15.08)

Dispatches from the Mountains. The Fan-Tastic Creek (5.13-15.08). Yellowstone just refuses to release its grip. Just as I'd begun to frequent the nearer ranges to Missoula, I meet Mark, a fellow Yellowstoner and sure enough a flurry of trips follows soon after. We visited in October, and then made a midwinter trip in early January, snowshoeing among wolves and dead elk before watching the BCS Championship in Cooke City, winter population 80. The snow was patchy the first mile, and the trail would through...

Dispatches from the Mountains: The Beginning of Winter (10.29.07)

http://www.ryanwnorton.blogspot.com/2008/08/i-took-quick-15-mile-jaunt-through.html

Dispatches from the Mountains. The Beginning of Winter (10.29.07). I took a quick, 15 mile jaunt through the forests of the Clearwater National Forest two weeks ago, trying to get one more 'easy access trip' to the high country before snow closes all of the access roads. It was a very still hike. That little bit about the hare was beautiful. August 25, 2008 at 11:09 AM. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile.

Dispatches from the Mountains: All Along The Watchtower (7.5-6.07)

Dispatches from the Mountains. All Along The Watchtower (7.5-6.07). And I loved it. Every step was like floating through a high altitude cotton field, only prettier and more ethereal. I gained elevation pretty steadily, and soon took more breaks to catch my breath or to drink some water, with a slight flowery taste to it. Watchtower Canyon seasoning. Yep, in the back of the truck," gesturing with a mad jab of his thumb, "hop on up and grab it. It was a fine trip to kick off the summer.
