Thursday, August 10, 2006. The guitar work in Tell Me Another. In the introduction to Substitute Teacher Blues Ryan is just talking to the crowd about his day job and he pauses to talk about John Mayer: ".nah, he's good.he's my age! He's a singer/songwriter, I'm a singer/songwriter and I'm a substitute teacher at my old high school and John is not. I'm willing to bet! But, Ryan does get his payback, check out the song. Last night I spent some more time looking for videos of songs by him. He is very good. I really like this tune: Song for the Road. I was about to order me a CD when I read on his myspace profile that he is signed with columbia. Oh well. it is download time! Posted by rz at 8:11 AM. Chicago, IL, United States.

Saturday, December 23, 2006. The Trouble With Physics. It has been a while since any - this one in particular - of my blogs has seen me at the keyboard. No more! After the blur of a weekend I had in Florida I decided I was too tired to do something "technical" during the flight and picked up Smolin's The Trouble With Physics. Which I've been meaning to read for a while. I ended up sleeping in the plane, but now I've finished the book and I can say it is very good. The last part of the book makes the rest...

Saturday, September 30, 2006. The Beautiful Girls - We're Already Gone. Few people if anyone at all know my musical tastes better than Sharon. For my birthday she gave me two CDs one of which is We're Already Gone by The Beautiful Girls. It has been on heavy rotation in my playlist as it is quite good. The first minute or so of the record is a jazzy musicgasm. They couldn't have started on a better note. Has a strange hold over me. I'll go ahead and refuge my musical ideology under the harmonica riff...

I wasn't planning on on blogging about it until I was done, but the book is so full of interesting information that I can't help myself! Right now I am to start chapter 7. Posted by rz at 7:36 AM. Thursday, September 28, 2006. What You Can't Say. Is one of my favorite essays. I like the way Paul Graham writes and the way he thinks. Rather, I like that he thinks very profoundly about what he writes and that this shines through his otherwise mostly colloquial and casual writing. Besides, it references Fight Club and talks about Noam Chomsky and 'Physics vs Literature' all in the same piece! There isn't much to say about the piece that it doesn't say already. So go read it! Finally, most other essays.

Monday, July 31, 2006. Cien Años de Solded (One Hundred Years of Solitude). This is not a book. This is *the* book. It is no wonder that it won Garcia Marquez a Nobel Price, though the price was formally for all of his stories and novels, I doubt that it would have been given to him without cien años. Since the book is so celebrated it is hard to say anything that has not been said before, so I'll keep this posting short. She is present from the very beginning until almost the very end. Every time a char...

Thursday, October 26, 2006. David Ford - The State of the Union. Let the facts have no bearing on public relations. For real, it's surreal, it's so real. Very good tune. It reminds me of Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls, only with much better lyrics. He is a master of the loop pedal! That scores brownie points in my book, of course. In youtube. So far I like this live version. Posted by rz at 9:21 AM. Sunday, October 01, 2006. Ribbons on your SUV! Posted by rz at 11:59 PM. Chicago, IL, United States.
