Sagebrush and Spuds: February 2014

http://sagebrushandspuds.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html

A Science Geek ruminates about life in Idaho. Friday, February 14, 2014. Dusty Dog Likes Snow. After a winter of region-wide dry, warm, sunny high pressure (that trapped Boise in an icy, gloomy, cold inversion) we had snow last week. My friend Mollie’s dog, Dusty, couldn’t resist dragging his nose in the powdery fun stuff as he galloped around on our walk. He looked like an over-eager hot chocolate drinker with whipped cream on his nose. Posted by Cindy Salo. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Sagebrush and Spuds: Rodeo Clowns: No Joke

http://sagebrushandspuds.blogspot.com/2015/07/rodeo-clowns-no-joke.html

A Science Geek ruminates about life in Idaho. Tuesday, July 14, 2015. Rodeo Clowns: No Joke. I spent two days in the bleachers with the parents, grandparents, and siblings of high school rodeo contestants in Salmon, Idaho. The snack bar served beef, but no beer. Has been immortalized in plastic. The fighter-clowns at Salmon’s high school rodeo might never reach those dizzying heights, but they were pros. Some fighter-clowns entertain the crowds between bulls. Flint tells jokes and dances. Cleated shoes s...

A Science Geek ruminates about life in Idaho. Sunday, May 3, 2015. All it Takes is a Clothespin. I spent much of last winter in Cochise County, Arizona, where friends and I have failed for several decades to make money raising cattle. We’ve been more successful caring for the land and building a strong community along the San Pedro. I focus on the latter two on our Facebook page. 8221; “Can I use your wifi? 8221; “Do your chickens eat onion peels, or should I put them in the trash? 8221; "Yes," she said&...

Sagebrush and Spuds: Three Degrees, No Garlic Scapes

http://sagebrushandspuds.blogspot.com/2015/07/three-degrees-no-garlic-scapes.html

A Science Geek ruminates about life in Idaho. Thursday, July 2, 2015. Three Degrees, No Garlic Scapes. In three agriculture degrees, several botany classes, and decades as a plant ecologist, I never ran into garlic scapes. I know and use terms such as “homoploid hybrid species” and “ Pseudotsuga menziesii. 8221; But, until last Saturday, I’d never met a garlic scape. Jessica and Jeremy of Swift River Farm. Introduced me to the curvy, green flower shoots at their booth at the Lemhi County Farmers Market.
