Alternative Histories: Two New Books on Music | The Fire Show
https://saintthefireshow.wordpress.com/2012/05/10/alternative-histories-two-new-books-on-music
Music, Books, Adventures. Alternative Histories: Two New Books on Music. May 10, 2012. How Soon Is Now? The Madmen and Mavericks Who Made Independent Music 1975–2005. Everybody Loves Our Town: A History of Grunge. Two monumental music history tomes from Faber. Everyone Loves Our Town. How Soon Is Now. And the inevitable point of no return when the bands themselves dissolve in interpersonal acrimony (Dinosuar Jr.), ill-health, or tragedy (Nirvana, most obviously, but several other cases too). With particu...

Music, Books, Adventures. 52 Books #14: The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet. April 14, 2011. The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet. Sceptre) is David Mitchell’s fifth book. Like his last,. Although Jacob is central to the novel, however, he’s also an entry point for Mitchell to explore this isolated, alien-seeming world, through Dejima’s visitors, inhabitants, officials, and prisoners. S ‘Human Nature/The Family of Blood’ but fell far short of making me feel sad or happy for Jacob and his family. P...

Music, Books, Adventures. How does Alice do it? August 24, 2009. Wow, talk about neglected. Since the last post there’ve been adventures in Big Sur [above], Napa, LA and San Francisco; gigs by TV on the Radio, Fever Ray and Grizzly Bear — three vying for ‘best gig of the year’ status — and more books than I ought to mention. Posts on these may or may not follow! Top of the books heap at the moment is Alice Munro’s. The View from Castle Rock. This sort of ambiguity is everywhere in Munro’s stories&#...

Food is good: Plums are not the only fruit
http://sebastianroach.blogspot.com/2012/09/plums-are-not-only-fruit.html
Monday, 17 September 2012. Plums are not the only fruit. The last couple of posts have been on stuff to do with plums, lots of plums (and there’s still jam and tart to come…), but I wouldn’t want you to go away with the idea that this blog is all, and only, about plums these days. Of course it’s not. And of course this time of year, the end of the summer and beginning of autumn, is famously the most abundant time ofyear. For all sorts of fruit and veg – not to mention wild mushrooms and game. Speaking fo...
Food is good: Al fresco Steak Salad
http://sebastianroach.blogspot.com/2012/08/al-fresco-steak-salad.html
Wednesday, 22 August 2012. Al fresco Steak Salad. Having spent so much of this year having a bit of a moan about the weather, I feel rather bad about having had nothing to say (on the blog at least) since the summer came good, but what with a week’s holiday, the Olympics. And starting a new job. Since last I posted, I don’t seem to have much time to cook, let alone write it up. Innovation is all very well, and there’s always a place, indeed a need, for it – but old favourites are good too. I served up a ...

Wednesday, 30 May 2012. Grilled Sardines: Obrigado for the memory. Having spent much of the past couple of months moaning about the weather, it’s a very enjoyable duty to redress the balance and celebrate the glorious end of May we’ve been enjoying down in this part of the World. It’s been positively Mediterranean, and it would be criminal not to make the most of it by eating plenty of fresh fish. And firing up the barbeque. The iconic Erno Goldfinger. Home of the best Pasteis de Nata. Floor from the fro...
Food is good: November 2011
http://sebastianroach.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 22 November 2011. Autumn at last: Quince jelly and old medlars. Mists, mellow fruitfulness and game birds, which I get the impression seem to be particularly abundant and cheap this year – I came across partridges being sold in the Bloomsbury (of all places) farmers market for just £2.50 a bird last week. Unfortunately just after I’d done my weekly meat shop (and with the freezer still chocker with Bert and Ernie. Of December last year, which I see from the date stamps on my photos was the very ...

http://sebastianroach.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html
Friday, 17 February 2012. A new definition of comfort food: Smoked Haddock Risotto. A couple of posts back. I wrote about how, at this time of year and with the arrival of (finally! Some proper winter weather, then food-wise it was all about big meaty stews and hearty soups, and then I went ahead and wrote up a chickpea and spinach dish just to be contrary/prove there was an alternative. That last bit was plainly unnecessary. Looking back over the posts I’ve published since the turn of the year. Anyway, ...
Food is good: Samba Beef: Brazilian ribs (from Scotland)
http://sebastianroach.blogspot.com/2012/09/samba-beef-brazilian-ribs-from-scotland.html
Friday, 28 September 2012. Samba Beef: Brazilian ribs (from Scotland). It’s just coming up to two years since I started this blog. In fact it will be two years to the day next Monday since I uploaded my first proper post, the very first sentence of which ended “ as I write this, it is bleak outside”. Bleak being to put it mildly. That first proper blog post. Was about wild mushrooms, and what a bumper year it was for them in 2010. Not exclusive to this year. Those same weather conditions will almost cert...

Food is good: April 2012
http://sebastianroach.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html
Monday, 30 April 2012. I've got a Paella dish and I'm gonna use it (eventually.). I got a paella pan for Christmas. A proper 40cm diameter, dimple bottomed steel dish that, I’m ashamed to say has done nothing since but hang decoratively on the kitchen wall. At least it hadn’t, until yesterday. At last, almost a full four months into the new year, I can hold my head up. My burden of shame is lifted. On Portobello Road inspired a last minute change of plan. Along with the chorizo. Butcher) would provide th...

Thursday, 26 July 2012. That Much Heralded (If Not Particularly Weather Appropriate) Chicken Liver Stew. Summer seems to have arrived at last, at least it has here in London – just in time for the Olympics. And I find myself committed to writing up a recipe for stew. Bleedin’ typical. Still, as stews go, it’s pretty light and summery, and with it’s combination of paprika dusted chicken livers and butter beans it has a distinct hint of Spain. In my previous post on chicken livers. Tuesday, 24 July 2012.

SAINT | A DICK MAAS film starring HUUB STAPEL
December 5 will never be the same. Saint Nicholas is not the good-hearted children's friend as people think he is. In reality he is a cruel bloodthirsty bishop who, whenever there's a full moon on december 5, will try to slaughter as many children as possible. Now every time there is a full moon on december 5, the date he died, something that on average takes place every 36 years, St. Niklas and his helpers will rise from the dead and take revenge in a horrible way. Goert was suspended because he had unr...
