Canberra

On December 20th 1954 a Canberra Bomber, flying out of RAF Bassingbourne, crashed into the ground between St Margarets Church and St Margaretsbury. Although the pilot successfully ejected from the stricken plane the two other crew members lost their lives. The English Electric Canberra a medium sized twin engined jet bomber was a very successful design having first flown in 1949 it was to remain in service with the RAF until 2006. [Note 1].

Stanstead Abbotts Local History Society. Would you be interested in joining SALHS? Naturally you are asking is it worth it, what will you get for your money? As a member however you would get reduced or even free entry to the Society events. There will be a regular news letter informing you of what is going on. Membership is in three categories. . Charges are pro rata after each quarter. Start of year is April 1st. Single £8 per annum. Couple £15 per annum. Family £20 per annum.

Stanstead Abbotts Local History Society. Our newsletter is published regularly by Terry Collins and reflects the running and events of the Society. Each member of the Society receives a copy of the newsletter as part of their membership but the committee have decided to publish our newsletters on a late release basis. Joseph Bigg, a Stanstead Abbotts man, bought the Hatfield Brewery in 1815 at which time its only outlet in Stanstead Abbotts was a pub named The Three Wheatsheaves. By 1819 he was bankrupted and the brewery was sold to Joseph Field, at which time it owned 31 full licences and 8 beer-. Mentioned Joseph Bigg may be the farmer/landowner who in 1840 owned much land at Easneye, according to the 1840 Tithe map, and was also the Overseer of the Rye House Workhouse.
