Sandhill and Sun Ranch. From 1982 to 2006 Al worked for The Nature Conservancy. During this time he focused on managing, and conducting research on large native grassland preserves with bison and fire. While with the Conservancy, Al held concurrent adjunct faculty appointments with South Dakota State University, the University of Nebraska on its Lincoln and Omaha campuses, and with the University of Oklahoma. He has authored or co-authored over 40 peer reviewed scientific publications.

Sandhill and Sun Ranch. The Sandhill and Sun Ranch cattle are commercial Red Angus. We raise our own replacement females, but purchase registered bulls developed to meet our cattle management objectives. Our selection is for moderate framed cattle that are efficient converters of native standing forages into high quality beef with minimum winter protein supplementation. Concentrated protein cubes, or a mix of ground alfalfa and grass hay, are primarily reserved for the younger cows, yearlings and calves.
