Padres Trail: Bludgeoning
http://padrestrail.blogspot.com/2012/08/bludgeoning.html
Saturday, August 18, 2012. There had been a flicker of hope, in some corners, about the Padres improved play since the All-Star break. In fact, since June 12th they had been the best team in the NL West - a game better than San Francisco. And they had gone into Pittsburgh, taken 2 of 3 from the Wild Card contenders, then taken the first game of a 4-game set in Atlanta, the Wild Card leaders. Wells was designated for assignment on 3 August. Since that date Ohlendorf's been really bad - 3 total starts,...

Padres Trail: April 2012
http://padrestrail.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html
Friday, April 27, 2012. Random Thoughts on Game 20. In my fourth Padres game of the year, I again watched the team win 2-1 with 2 runs in the eighth inning. Some random thoughts on the evening:. 2 With Edinson Volquez. Squaring off against Edwin Jackson. Then swung at 3 pitches and sat down. After an intentional walk to Cameron Maybin. You got to get a run home with second and third and nobody out. Just got to. Putting a ball into play would likely have netted at least one run unless it was a pop...Who d...

Padres Trail: January 2012
http://padrestrail.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html
Wednesday, January 18, 2012. And Then There Were Two. Padres had 11 arbitration-eligible players unsigned on Monday. As of Tuesday, all but 2 are signed. Only Clayton Richard and Dustin Moseley remain. If nothing else, the good news is Padres payroll is headed up. They had the third-lowest payroll on Opening Day 2011 and likely will be in the bottom quarter of all teams this season. They still have a ways to go to be competitive, but at least the team is trending in the right direction. Links to this post.

Padres Trail: February 2012

Tuesday, February 21, 2012. Off-Season Acquisition: Andrew Cashner. With FriarFest behind us and pitchers/catchers reported, let's take a look at the Padres off-season acquisitions, working backwards. Today, Andrew Cashner. Warning: this post may end up more about Jed Hoyer than Cashner. On January 6th the Padres sent Anthony Rizzo and RHP Zach Cates to Chicago for RHP Andrew Cashner and OF Kyung-Min Na. So much for the Anthony Rizzo Era. Links to this post. Tuesday, February 14, 2012. If Owings makes th...

Padres Trail: May 2012
http://padrestrail.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html
Tuesday, May 29, 2012. I hope all enjoyed their long weekend, and I would like to welcome Carlos Quentin back to the fight. Nice to see him finally take an at-bat as a Padre during a regular-season game. I hope he plays every game from this point forward. I did manage to catch the top of the seventh yesterday, and saw one of those plays that I just don't get. The Contact Play. It should be called "The Contact Play That Never Works". If what usually happens happens, the batter is thrown out at first and t...

Padres Trail: August 2012
http://padrestrail.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html
Wednesday, August 29, 2012. A quick thought ahead of the 1030 news conference with new ownership:. In 2009 the Padres went 39-35 after the All-Star Break, 37-25 after July 27. They carried that momentum into the 2010 season and to within a game of making the playoffs. As play started on 29 August 09 they had gone 19-23 since the Break , and would win 20 of their next 33 games to close out the season. Something to think about. Links to this post.
