Wood Type in the 1970s. On a summer trip to visit family in the area between Rochester and Lockport, New York, I bought some small, old posters for parties and socials. They were printed with wood and metal type by a local printer. My favorite is "HAM AND TURKEY NIGHT" because it shows the client's handwritten notes for text revisions. Around 1987 or 1988, when I was a student at the North Carolina State University School of Design, I took Polaroids of type and lettering on my family's hatching egg farm in North Carolina. The "2" and "3" were stencils I cut years before to number the chicken houses, and they remind me of the typeface Balance. A Gem of a Little Island". Sand Island was the name, in the early 1970s, for a microscopic dot of land off Pohnpei, an island that is much larger, but still only a speck in the vast western Pacific.
