Sandra's Stories

Sunday, 17 August 2014. Dipping into Pandora's wedding box. On 22nd May 2014, my South African boyfriend Danie proposed and we got engaged. We planned to get married one year later. On 31st May, Danie left Australia and went back to South Africa. By close of business 1st June, I’d bought my wedding dress, chosen the bridesmaids’ dresses and the colour scheme. A week later, the rest of the wedding was booked and organised. What are you going to do for the rest of the year? Danie asked me what the table at...

Sandra's Stories: March 2014

http://www.sandrathompsonauthor.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html

Monday, 3 March 2014. When I was seven years old, I found a note under my pillow. It said:. Please use this 20 cents to buy something nice for you and your beautiful sister Jennifer. Don’t tell anyone about this note. So I told Mum. I told you not to tell anyone! Beware: fish sperm sac, NOT cottage cheese. Sandra's Stories: December 2013

http://www.sandrathompsonauthor.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html

Sunday, 8 December 2013. I can see clearly now. Regular readers of this blog may recall my disastrous experience at the optometrist a few months ago. I tried to get my eyes checked at a Japanese-speaking optometrist, but couldn’t understand a thing they said. Daily headaches and eye strain later, I can confirm… yes, thanks to my terrible Japanese, I’d been given the wrong prescription. As soon as I realised what was happening, I panicked. I was in the same situation all over again! I can see clearly now.

Stephanite: Sydney and beyond: Wintery getaway

http://stephanite.blogspot.com/2011/05/wintery-getaway.html

Stephanite: Sydney and beyond. Tuesday, May 10, 2011. I dare say, having lived through three German winters and regularly camped in a tent where normal people pay to stay INSIDE a building, I'm a little bit qualified to give advice about keeping toasty! Insert gratuitous picture of cold but sunny German winter day with nice castle in background). So, the basic rules for "real" winter camping or travelling:. Keep dry, and keep your head and tummy warm! Find a nice outer "shell" like a lightweight but wate...

Stephanite: Sydney and beyond. Monday, September 23, 2013. Wolli Creek to Cronulla by bike. If, like me, your much loved bicycle only really gets dusted off a few times a year, this is a ride for you. Starting at Wolli Creek train station (just ten minutes from the city), no one has the excuse that they can't get there. Heading out past the new Woollies (pick up some supplies on the way? Well, a map might help so perhaps visit Bikely. Before you set off. The beauty of this ride is it finishes in Cronulla...

Stephanite: Sydney and beyond: Summer beer tasting guide

http://stephanite.blogspot.com/2011/02/summer-beer-tasting-guide.html

Stephanite: Sydney and beyond. Tuesday, February 22, 2011. Summer beer tasting guide. Sitting enjoying a nice cold one at sunset at Penrith Panthers*, pondering why wine gets the privilege of having all the descriptor words, Sandra, Bron and myself decided it was high time to do a proper beer tasting. So we set a date and, not unusually, dragged Sarah into the shenanigans. I'm keen to know whether you agree with our impressions. I hear you cry. Lack of body, insipid. Drinkable. No aroma. I was pleasantly...

Stephanite: Sydney and beyond. Thursday, February 10, 2011. Or, Busting the myths of camping. Those in this world who screw up their noses and say to me "camping? Haven't you heard of this marvellous new invention called hotels? Are really, truly missing out! To help them understand why, I want to bust a few of the myths about camping, 2011-style. Glamping - glam-camping - as it has come to be known. Myth: "The toilets are always stinky! Actually, pit toilets have come a long long way! But you can spend ...
